Which Halo should you start with?
Choose based on whether you want a connected run through older campaigns, a current multiplayer option, a remake, or background fiction. These are entry points, not a universally required story order: official Halo guides recommend books and games by interest, but do not prescribe one order for every reader.

Start with the games
Halo: The Master Chief Collection
The collection is the clearest option if you want multiple older Master Chief games in one package rather than choosing each game separately. Xbox describes it as six games in one integrated experience and lists PC and Xbox One. It is a collection, not a statement that every Halo game is included; Xbox’s franchise catalogue lists other titles separately. See the collection on Xbox.
Halo Infinite
Halo Infinite offers two distinct ways to play: a campaign described by Xbox as expansive and open-world, and multiplayer that Xbox describes as free-to-play. The campaign and multiplayer should not be treated as the same purchase or experience; check your platform’s store for the current campaign listing, multiplayer access, and platform details. Halo: Campaign Evolved
Halo: Campaign Evolved is a modern remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, and it launched July 28, 2026. Xbox announced availability for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire’s launch announcement and Halo Support’s release notes provide the current release details.

Physical editions are sold through select retailers worldwide, but the format depends on platform. Xbox’s Collector’s Edition announcement describes a game disc for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, while its Steam edition includes a code. Start with Halo books
Books are an established way to explore Halo’s history, characters, and periods beyond the games. The official Halo book guide organizes recommendations around eras and game connections, so readers can choose by subject rather than attempt to read every novel in publication order. The Fall of Reach: Master Chief and the SPARTAN-II origins
Eric Nylund’s The Fall of Reach was originally released October 30, 2001, before Halo: Combat Evolved. It follows the SPARTAN-II program and Master Chief’s origins, while establishing Reach and the conflict preceding the discovery of Halo. This is a natural first choice if your main interest is the Chief or the early human-Covenant conflict. Halo Waypoint’s guide gives the book’s background and date.
The Flood and First Strike: continue around Combat Evolved
- The Flood by William C. Dietz (2003) novelizes Halo: Combat Evolved and adds perspectives beyond the game’s campaign.
- First Strike by Eric Nylund (2003) follows the Chief and survivors after Combat Evolved as they try to return to Earth.
The official book guide describes both connections; readers who have played the original campaign may find those references more familiar, but the books provide additional narrative rather than a mandatory prerequisite. Halo Waypoint.
Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One: stories across the universe
Waypoint Chronicles – Volume One, by Jeff Easterling and Alexander Wakeford, collects more than thirty short stories spanning different parts of the Halo universe. Its listed release date is May 26, 2026, and the official guide lists trade paperback, ebook, and unabridged audiobook formats. It suits readers who want varied settings and characters rather than one continuous novel. Check the official book guide for its listed formats.

What to know about older Halo online features
The January 13, 2022 shutdown applies to Xbox 360 Halo game servers, not to every Halo title or current online mode. Those Xbox 360 games remain playable, but their online features—including challenges and file share—are unavailable. Halo Support documents the legacy service change. If you are choosing a game specifically for online play, check the current platform listing and support information for that title rather than assuming the old shutdown covers newer games.
