Spoilers for Halo season 2, episode 6, “Onyx.” John and Makee touch separate artifacts at the same moment, and the episode cuts before revealing what happens. The paired contact brings their storylines together, but its precise effect remains unresolved at the end of the episode.
What happens at the end of “Onyx”?
“Onyx” is season 2, episode 6. In the closing sequence, Cortana tells John that the Covenant is looking for Halo and urges him to get there first. She reveals that she is with Makee and the Arbiter, then guides John to the artifact on Onyx. When the artifact glows, John touches it just as Makee touches a separate artifact aboard the Covenant ship. The show cuts away before explaining the result.

The official Halo season 2, episode 6 debrief confirms that simultaneous contact is the closing beat. It does not establish what the artifacts do next. So the cliffhanger is the contact itself—not a revealed vision, transport, or other effect.
Why do John and Makee touch the artifacts at the same time?
The episode presents the timing as a convergence between two characters who are far apart and on opposing sides of the conflict. John reaches the Onyx artifact because Cortana directs him there; Makee is with the Covenant and touches its artifact. The visual parallel links their storylines and raises the stakes around the artifacts, but episode 6 does not explain a mechanism or confirm that either character deliberately coordinates the moment.

#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters: the episode establishes that both touch their respective artifacts simultaneously. Any claim about what this triggers goes beyond what “Onyx” reveals.
What is Cortana doing with John, Makee, and ONI?
Cortana has a role in more than one thread of the episode. She helps John find the artifact, but she also gives Parangosky information about Covenant locations and agrees to remain with the Covenant to provide intelligence. Parangosky tells her to stay embedded as long as she can.

- Movie Title: Halo: Season One
These actions give Cortana immediate strategic value to both John and ONI. The episode does not settle her long-term allegiance or fully explain her motives, so it is more accurate to describe what she does than to declare her finally loyal to one side.
Why is Kai angry with Ackerson?
Kai’s confrontation with Ackerson centers on Reach and the cost of ONI’s decisions. She challenges whether recruits are being sent into a mission they cannot survive, then presses Ackerson over whether he knowingly allowed Reach to fall. He says the attack was inevitable and that he saved her. His answer does not restore her trust.
Rank #3
- Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller, War
Kai ends their simulation and rushes back toward John. Ackerson says he has already sent ONI black-ops forces. The scene shows Kai breaking with unquestioning obedience, while leaving her next decision open.
What happens between Makee, the Arbiter, and Uto ’Mdama?
On the Covenant ship, Uto ’Mdama identifies Cortana’s data chip as the source of a transmission that let the Covenant track planets. He calls for Makee’s execution. The Arbiter opposes Uto, and a fight begins. In the same closing sequence, Makee touches the Covenant-held artifact as John touches the one on Onyx.
Rank #4
- Action, Adventure, Science Fiction, Thriller, War
The episode establishes a conflict within the Covenant group and the artifact parallel. It does not explain the Arbiter’s eventual political standing or the consequences of the fight.

Kwan finds Halsey beneath the surface, and the two reach a Forerunner cavern occupied by Miranda’s science team. Miranda says Halsey’s research helped her find her mother’s mistake. The discovery connects Halsey’s earlier work to Miranda’s investigation, but episode 6 leaves the cavern’s wider significance and consequences unresolved.

How does Onyx lore relate to the TV series?
The official Halo debrief places the episode alongside broader Onyx lore and recommends Halo: Ghosts of Onyx, Halo: Glasslands, The Thursday War, and Legacy of Onyx as further reading. Those books are optional background, not prerequisites for understanding the episode. The television series should not be assumed to follow the novels’ continuity exactly.
The debrief also describes Onyx’s place in broader franchise lore, including ONI’s concealment of the planet and the Forerunner structures beneath its surface. That context adds background to the setting, but the episode’s cliffhanger does not depend on knowing the novels or resolving every detail of Onyx’s history.
Where does episode 6 sit in season 2?
Paramount+ identifies “Onyx” as season 2, episode 6, and its official episode guide lists “Thermopylae” and then “Halo” after it. The artifact contact is therefore a mid-season cliffhanger, with the episode itself withholding its outcome.
