Hailee Steinfeld gives Sinners an emotional center that can be easy to miss amid its blues, violence and supernatural horror. As Mary, a woman returning to a community she knows is hers even when others may question her place in it, Steinfeld makes the film’s juke joint feel like more than a setting: it is a home shaped by memory, music and belonging. Calling her the film’s best part is a subjective judgment, but it has a strong case.
Who does Hailee Steinfeld play in Sinners?
Steinfeld plays Mary, Stack’s former partner. The Associated Press describes Mary as biracial and passing as white, a position that gives her story a particular tension around how others see her and where she understands herself to belong. The Associated Press’s account of the film places that character in a 1932 Clarksdale, Mississippi, story that blends supernatural horror, gangster drama, romance, blues and action.

That combination matters to Mary’s role. She is not just a romantic link to Stack or a witness to the film’s danger. Her connection to the juke joint ties personal history to the communal life the film gathers there.
Why Mary’s sense of belonging makes the performance stand out
Steinfeld offered a precise way to understand Mary in a Novastream cast interview. “What I loved, though, so much about the juke for Mary was that even though it was a new place to her, it was home.” She explained that its food, people and music made the unfamiliar feel familiar. Mary knows she belongs, even if an outsider might doubt it. Read the Novastream interview.

That perspective gives the performance its quiet force. Mary’s belonging is not something she needs the room to grant her; it is grounded in her own recognition of the place and its history. Steinfeld’s account makes the juke joint feel like a meeting point for character, music, community and memory—not merely the backdrop for what happens next.
The film’s broader story gives that sense of home extra weight. A juke joint built around blues and community becomes the setting for a collision with supernatural horror. Mary’s familiarity with the space offers a human counterpoint to the upheaval around it.

Mary and Stack: affection complicated by anger
Mary’s history with Stack gives her a personal stake in the film’s emotional conflicts. The AP review describes her as angry with him for leaving; the reason behind his departure is revealed later. That delayed context means their relationship carries both unresolved hurt and a history the audience has not yet been given in full.
Steinfeld’s performance can therefore register more than longing or resentment alone. Mary is a person with her own connection to home and family history, not simply a figure defined by Stack’s choices. The AP critic Jocelyn Noveck calls Steinfeld’s Mary “poignant”—a specific critical response, not evidence of a universal ranking. Read the Associated Press review.

How Steinfeld’s work fits the ensemble
Sinners is an ensemble film, and its shifting mix of genres makes a simple cast ranking difficult to establish. In an Associated Press interview, director Ryan Coogler praised Steinfeld and Wunmi Mosaku for handling Michael B. Jordan’s two distinct performances as Smoke and Stack. Steinfeld also said making the film brought her closer to her family and family history, and that it might encourage audiences to explore their own genealogy. The AP interview and film coverage offers that ensemble context.
That is a useful way to describe Steinfeld’s contribution without pretending the film has a settled “best performance.” Her work helps the audience read the brothers’ world through someone who has her own complicated relationship to it. She brings an intimate register to a story whose scale also depends on music, horror and action.

Is Hailee Steinfeld the best part of Sinners?
That depends on what a viewer values. If the film’s most memorable element is its genre blend, its blues or Jordan’s double role, another part of the ensemble may take priority. If the measure is an emotionally grounded performance that connects the juke joint’s communal life to a character’s private history, Steinfeld has a persuasive claim.
The case rests on Mary’s particular position: she returns to a place that feels like home, carries anger toward a former partner, and understands her belonging from the inside. The AP’s “poignant” description supports that reading as one critic’s judgment. Neither that review nor the available reporting establishes a consensus that Steinfeld outranks the rest of the cast, so “best part” works best as an argument rooted in what her performance brings to the film.
