Shōyō Hinata is listed as a middle blocker on Karasuno’s high-school roster—not as a wing spiker. The same official roster lists Kei Tsukishima and Tadashi Yamaguchi as middle blockers; Tobio Kageyama and Kōshi Sugawara as setters; Yū Nishinoya as a libero; and Ryūnosuke Tanaka, Daichi Sawamura, and Asahi Azumane as wing spikers. Nekoma’s Tetsurō Kuroo is also listed as a middle blocker.
What position does Hinata play in Haikyuu!!?
Hinata is a first-year Karasuno middle blocker in the official movie special roster. The anime’s official Season 1 page and Season 4 page also identify him as a first-year middle blocker. These listings establish his position in those roster contexts; they do not provide a complete position history for every later story arc or his post-school career.
“Middle blocker” is the listed position, even though Hinata is often associated with quick attacks. In general volleyball terms, middle blockers are central front-row players involved in blocking and attacking. The franchise roster gives the label, rather than a detailed tactical explanation of how each player performs the role.

What do these volleyball positions mean?
Middle blockers: Hinata, Tsukishima, Yamaguchi, and Kuroo
Middle blocker is the listed role for three Karasuno first-years—Hinata, Tsukishima, and Yamaguchi—and Nekoma third-year Kuroo. In general terms, middle blockers play at the center of the front row, contributing to blocking and attacking. The roster does not rank these players or describe their individual tactics.
Setters: Kageyama and Sugawara
Kageyama and Sugawara are both listed as setters, despite being different school years. A setter generally organizes attacks by delivering sets to hitters. The roster identifies their roles but does not give further tactical detail.
Libero: Nishinoya
Nishinoya is Karasuno’s listed libero. In general volleyball language, a libero is a defensive specialist. The cited roster is not a rules guide, so it does not establish rule restrictions or substitution procedures.
Wing spikers: Tanaka, Daichi, and Asahi
Tanaka, Daichi, and Asahi are listed as wing spikers. That is the source’s term for their roles; it can be understood broadly as a pin-hitter position. Their shared label does not mean the roster gives them identical responsibilities in every play.

The roster is a snapshot of the school teams and years shown on the movie special page, not a statement that each character keeps the same position in every period of the story. Hinata’s first-year middle-blocker listing is consistent across that roster and the official Season 1 and Season 4 pages, but those sources do not establish a complete timeline beyond those contexts. For broader position changes, the specific arc and continuity need to be checked separately.
