What is the Battle of the Garbage Dump?
“Battle of the Garbage Dump” is the name associated with the Karasuno–Nekoma rivalry. The film’s English title in the Japan Film Database is Haikyu!!: The Dumpster Battle; its Japanese title is Gekijō-ban Haikyu!! Gomisuteba no Kessen. The story centers on the teams’ first official match against each other, in round three of the Spring High national tournament. They have faced one another repeatedly in practice, but never in a tournament match. The film’s official synopsis sets their contrasting styles against each other: Karasuno’s aggressive play and Nekoma’s emphasis on keeping the ball alive and connecting as a team. Karasuno arrives after defeating Inarizaki in round two. The matchup therefore lands well into the teams’ story, rather than serving as an introduction to the entire cast or premise.
How the film fits into Haikyu!!
Hinata Shoyo joins Karasuno inspired by the player known as the “Little Giant.” He and setter Kageyama develop the fast quick attack that becomes a defining part of the team’s play. Karasuno’s rivalry with Tokyo’s Nekoma grows through joint training, where Nekoma’s patient, connected style makes it a natural foil for Karasuno. By the time of the film, Karasuno has progressed through the Miyagi qualifiers and into the national tournament, including its win over Inarizaki.
