Park Seo-jun plays Jang Tae-sang in the first season and Ho-jae in the second; Han So-hee plays Yoon Chae-ok in both. The characters’ connection is central to the story, but Tae-sang and Ho-jae are not simply interchangeable names.
How the two seasons and their casts connect
Netflix places the first season in early 1945, when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule, and the second in 2024 Seoul. The first season arrived in two parts: its first seven episodes were released on December 22, 2023, and its final three on January 5, 2024. Season 2 premiered September 27, 2024. Netflix’s season 1 release announcement and season 2 announcement provide those dates and premises.

Season 2 reconnects the leads after the time jump. Netflix describes Ho-jae as strikingly similar in appearance to Tae-sang, and says Chae-ok recognizes him as Tae-sang and is perplexed. That resemblance is the point of the mystery, not proof that the two names refer to the same character.
Season 1 cast: 1945 Gyeongseong
Jang Tae-sang — Park Seo-jun
Tae-sang is a wealthy, well-connected owner of the House of Golden Treasure pawnshop. In Netflix Tudum’s season guide, he is drawn into a search after Ishikawa threatens him over the disappearance of the Japanese commissioner’s Korean mistress. His path crosses Chae-ok’s as the search unfolds.
#1 Best Overall
Yoon Chae-ok — Han So-hee
Chae-ok is a missing-person sleuth who has worked with her father for more than a decade. She comes to Gyeongseong looking for her missing mother and joins forces with Tae-sang. Their partnership anchors the season’s human story amid the threat of strange creatures.
Yukiko Maeda — Claudia Kim
Netflix Tudum identifies Claudia Kim as Yukiko Maeda. The mapping is confirmed in its character guide.
Yoon Jung-won — Cho Han-cheul
Cho Han-cheul plays Chae-ok’s father, Yoon Jung-won, who joins her search for his missing wife.
Other announced season 1 performers
Netflix’s first-season announcement also names Kim Hae-sook and Wi Ha-jun among the cast, alongside the principal performers. The cited official material confirms their participation but does not establish their character mappings, so they are not assigned a role here. Netflix credits Kang Eun-kyung as writer and Chung Dong-yoon as director for season 1.

Ho-jae — Park Seo-jun
Ho-jae is a present-day character whose resemblance to Tae-sang unsettles Chae-ok. In a September 2024 TIME interview and season 2 explainer, Ho-jae is described as using a different name and having no memory of season 1’s events when the audience meets him. Those details are spoilers for viewers who have not begun season 2.
Yoon Chae-ok — Han So-hee
Chae-ok survives into the modern era. Season 2 raises questions about that survival after she drinks Najin at the end of season 1; TIME’s account also discusses the abilities and isolation associated with her condition. These are season 1 and season 2 spoilers. In the same TIME coverage, Han So-hee describes Chae-ok’s changing motivation: “She wants to live a life that can help others, instead of focusing on herself.”
Rank #2
Kuroko Leader — Lee Mu-saeng
Netflix identifies Lee Mu-saeng as the Kuroko Leader, commander of the Kurokos, an elite operative group. The character directs experiments at Jeonseung Biotech.
Seung-jo — Bae Hyeon-seong
Netflix identifies Bae Hyeon-seong as Seung-jo, who pursues Ho-jae and Chae-ok.
Season 2 is written by Kang Eun-kyung and directed by Chung Dong-yoon and Jo Yeong-min, according to Netflix’s announcement. Chung told Netflix Tudum that “Season 2 presents a story with a completely different charm.”

Park Seo-jun plays Jang Tae-sang in season 1 and Ho-jae in season 2. Han So-hee plays Yoon Chae-ok across both seasons. Chae-ok is the continuing link between the 1945 story and 2024 Seoul; Ho-jae’s resemblance to Tae-sang is a deliberate source of uncertainty.
