Gwyneth Paltrow described her daughter Apple Martin’s 2022 departure for college as “almost as profound as giving birth.” The remark captured Paltrow’s personal reaction to a major family transition; she later spoke about the grief, changing sense of purpose and new space she experienced as both children left home.
What Paltrow said when Apple left for college
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Paltrow reflected on Apple leaving home in fall 2022. E! News reported her saying, “I know it sounds nuts, but it feels almost as profound as giving birth.” The comparison was Paltrow’s description of her own emotional experience, not a claim about what parents generally feel. E! News reported the remark on September 26, 2022.
Apple went to Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Vanity Fair’s 2025 profile later recalled the fall 2022 drop-off and Paltrow’s account of the attention surrounding her famous family. Vanity Fair’s retrospective places the departure in context.
How her account changed as both children left home
By October 2024, Paltrow was speaking about life after both of her children had left for college. In a Q&A reported by ABC News, she said she experienced “waves of kind of grief and sadness,” while also reconnecting with a part of herself she had not felt since before becoming a parent. She described having “a little more space and imagination,” adding, “So, it’s evolving. It’s interesting.” ABC News reported the Q&A on October 22, 2024.

In a 2025 Vanity Fair interview, Paltrow described “this weird, deep grief that comes with letting go, saying goodbye, and then calling into question your own purpose.” She also spoke about the need to let children live their own lives: “We have to deeply let go and let them have their own experience and be the kind of person that they want to boomerang back to.”
Why the timeline matters
- Fall 2022: Apple left for Vanderbilt, and Paltrow made the comparison to giving birth in her account of that first departure.
- October 2024: After both children had left for college, Paltrow described a mix of sadness and renewed personal space.
- 2025: She reflected further on letting go, parenthood and questions of purpose.
The headline refers to the 2022 departure and Paltrow’s immediate response—not a new event in 2024 or 2025. Her later comments add context to how she described the transition over time.
