Guru Nanak Gurpurab commemorates the birth of Sikhism’s founder, and the story of his companionship with Bhai Mardana gives the observance a human point of entry: Sikh tradition remembers the Muslim musician accompanying Guru Nanak’s hymns on the rabab. Their story leads into teachings of devotion, honest work, sharing, equality and service—not the erasure of religious differences.

What is Gurpurab?

Gurpurab is a Sikh anniversary observance. Guru Nanak Gurpurab, also called Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti, commemorates Guru Nanak’s birth. The occasion is marked through worship and community activities, which can include reading scripture, singing kirtan (devotional hymns), prayer, seva (service) and langar, the community meal. The Government of India’s tourism listing describes a Guru Nanak Gurpurab observance, while the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) explains the birth anniversary tradition on its Guru Nanak biography page.

The date should not be treated as a permanent Gregorian-calendar date. The SGPC says Guru Nanak’s birthday is celebrated on Kartik Puranmashi, while its biography also records differing historical birth-date accounts: 15 April 1469 and, in some chronicles, 20 October 1469. Those accounts do not establish one uncontested historical date. The specific Gregorian date of the annual celebration depends on the Sikh calendar observance; check a Sikh authority or local gurdwara for the year in question.

Who was Bhai Mardana, and what did he play?

Bhai Mardana is remembered in Sikh tradition as Guru Nanak’s lifelong companion and a musician associated with the rabab, a plucked string instrument. The SGPC’s account connects Mardana with the rabab and the musical presentation of Guru Nanak’s hymns. A 2008 feature from India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) describes Janamsakhi stories in which Guru Nanak asks Mardana to play the rabab as bani—sacred composition—was descending. Janamsakhis are traditional narratives about Guru Nanak’s life; such episode-level details are best understood as accounts preserved in that tradition, not as independently established historical reporting. The PIB feature also identifies its author and notes that the views expressed do not necessarily reflect those of the Government of India.

The pairing matters beyond the instrument. In the traditional account, music is part of how the hymns are shared, while companionship is part of the story of their transmission. Mardana’s Muslim identity and his friendship with Guru Nanak can be understood as a relationship across religious boundaries. It should not be used to claim that Sikhism makes religious distinctions disappear, or that the two men’s story represents every interreligious relationship.

What message does Guru Nanak’s story express?

One creator, remembered in daily life

Ik Onkar—often rendered as “One Universal Creator”—expresses the Sikh understanding of the oneness of God. The Guru Nanak Society of Australia introduces this teaching alongside three foundational practices: Naam Japna, remembering or meditating on God; Kirat Karni, earning an honest living; and Vand Chakna, sharing what one has with others. These are not separate from ordinary life: they connect devotion with work and responsibility toward the community. See the society’s Learn Sikhism page.

Equality made tangible through langar

Langar is the free community kitchen associated with Sikh gurdwaras. The Guru Nanak Society of Australia describes it as open to all, served by volunteers, and eaten together as equals. Sharing a meal in a common space gives visible form to equality and community: people gather and eat together rather than being separated by status. Langar is also an expression of seva, since preparing and serving food are forms of voluntary service.

Equality includes women

In a discussion of gender equality, the World Sikh Organization of Canada reproduces a passage it identifies as Sri Guru Granth Sahib, ang 473. Its translation reflects on women’s roles in birth, family and society, and asks why women should be called inferior when kings are born from them. One line reads: “So why call her bad from whom kings are born.” This is the organization’s reproduced translation; wording varies among translations, so it should not be treated as the only authoritative English rendering. Read its discussion, “Celebrating Guru Nanak’s Message of Equality,” for the passage and its context.

How do Sikhs celebrate Guru Nanak Gurpurab?

Practices vary among communities and gurdwaras, but the observance commonly centers on worship, scripture, music and service. A program may include:

  • Scripture reading: readings from Sikh scripture as part of the commemoration.
  • Kirtan: devotional singing that places the hymns at the heart of the gathering.
  • Prayer: communal worship and reflection.
  • Seva and langar: volunteering and sharing a community meal.

For a particular year, confirm the date and program with a local gurdwara: the calendar date and the activities offered are local and time-specific. The Ministry of Tourism’s listing for Gurpurab Guru Nanak Dev Jayanti 2024 is an example of an event listing, not a standing calendar for future years.

Why the story remains meaningful

Guru Nanak and Bhai Mardana’s remembered companionship brings devotional music and friendship into view, while the teachings associated with Guru Nanak connect faith to daily conduct: remember God, earn honestly, share, and serve. Gurpurab holds those ideas together through remembrance and community practice. Its meaning is not that religious differences cease to matter, but that devotion, dignity and shared humanity can cross them.
