That reading is interpretive, not Netflix’s official tagline, but it is grounded in the trailer’s ominous atmosphere and the Creature’s own words.
The Creature claims the story for himself
“My maker told his tale. And I… will tell you mine,” says the Creature in Netflix’s official trailer. The line shifts the familiar creator-and-monster conflict toward the being who has usually been treated as its subject. He is not merely an image Victor looks upon; he speaks, remembers, and asserts a perspective of his own. Netflix identifies Jacob Elordi as the actor playing the Creature.
The trailer’s framing makes that claim feel mythic: an origin story is being challenged by the creation itself. “Macabre mythology” is a way to describe this gothic, ominous presentation, rather than language Netflix uses to label the film. Watch the official trailer and read Netflix’s synopsis.
Creation becomes a demand for recognition
The Creature calls Victor “My creator” and asks him for “a single grace.” The word choice turns the relationship into more than a scientific triumph or a simple chase: the creation appears to ask something of the person responsible for bringing him into existence.

The trailer makes love the hinge between appeal and threat. The Creature says, “If you are not to award me love… then I will indulge… in rage.” The line gives the trailer its emotional logic: rejection is presented not as a passing hurt but as a force that can remake the relationship between creator and creation. These are the Creature’s lines in the trailer, not statements by del Toro about the film.
What Netflix says the film is about
Netflix describes Victor Frankenstein as a brilliant but egotistical scientist whose experiment brings a creature to life and leads to the undoing of both creator and creation. Its title page calls the film a reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic tale. That official framing supports the trailer’s emphasis on consequences, while leaving the exact shape of the film’s story to the film itself.

Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, the film stars Oscar Isaac and Jacob Elordi, with Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz also named in Netflix’s cast information. For a comparison with Shelley’s novel, the clearest questions raised by the trailer are whose perspective dominates, how creator and Creature are characterized, and how much agency the Creature claims. The trailer alone does not establish all the ways the finished adaptation changes the book. Netflix’s film page identifies Shelley’s story as the source.
A handmade production behind the gothic look
The trailer’s stylized images sit within a production built with an emphasis on physical craft. The Associated Press reports that del Toro sought a handmade film on an epic scale, with handcrafted sets, wardrobe, and props, and describes the work of production designer Tamara Deverell, costume designer Kate Hawley, cinematographer Dan Laustsen, and creature designer Mike Hill.

Hill told the Associated Press: “I knew that if we made his face too garishly horrible, when you’re in a tight close-up on this character, if you’re looking at wounds and gore, you’re distracted. You have to keep the soul here.” His explanation offers a useful lens on the Creature’s design: horror is present, but the character’s face also has to hold attention as a face, not only as a display of wounds. That production account provides context for the visual approach; the trailer by itself cannot show how every set or effect was made. Associated Press reporting on the film’s production.
