What the scores say—and what they don’t
Pan’s Labyrinth is the highest-rated entry in this particular list, three percentage points ahead of The Shape of Water. Blade II is the lowest, followed by Mimic. The Tomatometer is a critics’ measure: Rotten Tomatoes separately displays the Popcornmeter for audience ratings. Neither score predicts whether a particular film will suit an individual viewer.

The ranking spans dark fantasy, science fiction, creature features, horror and comic-book adaptations. That range makes genre and story approach useful companions to the number. For instance, a viewer seeking fairy-tale darkness might start with Pan’s Labyrinth, while someone after large-scale science-fiction action could choose Pacific Rim, despite its lower position.
Why Pinocchio is not in this 12-film ranking
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, co-directed with Mark Gustafson, is missing from the November 2025 ranking article. Its Rotten Tomatoes film page reports a 96% Tomatometer from 298 critic reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter; the page gives its streaming release date as December 9, 2022. Those figures belong to that film page and should not be silently inserted into the separate 12-entry ranking. The omission means the article should not be read as a complete current inventory of every feature del Toro directed.
