The six-episode series is a fictionalized dramatization inspired by Griselda Blanco’s life—not a documentary or definitive account of what happened.
How is Sofía Vergara as Griselda Blanco?
Vergara makes the role a marked departure from the comedy work most viewers associate with her. The transformation is not just a matter of appearance: contemporary reporting describes makeup and prosthetic elements, while the performance’s appeal rests on the emotional work underneath that change. TIME critic Judy Berman praised Vergara’s compelling emotional performance, a useful measure of why the character can command attention even when the writing does not fully open her up.

That distinction matters. Griselda is presented as ruthless and resourceful, but a forceful portrayal is not the same thing as access to the real Blanco’s private motives. Co-creator and executive producer Eric Newman put the limit plainly: “There’s no interview you’re going to get with Griselda Blanco that tells you what she was thinking and feeling.”
Does the series tell the true story?
No—not in the sense of a documentary or a definitive biography. Netflix describes Griselda as a fictionalized dramatization inspired by Blanco’s life and set in Miami in the 1970s and ’80s. In a Netflix Tudum feature published Nov. 26, 2025, the creators said they condensed timelines and combined events. Dialogue, scenes, and motives should therefore be understood as dramatic choices, not verified historical evidence.

That caveat is especially important when interpreting the series’ portrait of Blanco. Netflix’s 2021 announcement quoted Vergara describing Blanco as a “larger-than-life character” whose tactics allowed her to rule a billion-dollar empire. That is the star’s promotional characterization, not an independently established statistic or a substitute for historical documentation.
What works—and what holds it back?
Performance and production
Berman’s Jan. 25, 2024 review in TIME praised not only Vergara’s emotional work but also the performances, editing, costumes, and production design. Together, those elements give the series a vivid period setting and help make its crime-drama world engaging.
Rank #2
A familiar rise-and-fall story
The principal reservation is narrative freshness. TIME found the rise-and-fall plotting predictable and the show’s insight into its protagonist limited. That creates a tension at the center of the series: Vergara’s performance can make Blanco compelling to watch, while the script’s familiar shape leaves questions about her character and inner life less explored.
How to judge its historical drama
Because the creators compressed events and invented or merged dramatic material, the series is better judged as a performance-led crime drama than as a guide to Blanco’s life. Its strongest case is the acting and period craft; its weaker one is whether it offers a surprising account of its protagonist.

Is Griselda worth watching?
If you are drawn to Vergara’s dramatic turn, crime dramas, or richly staged period settings, the series has clear strengths. If you want a fresh, psychologically searching account of Blanco—or a reliable record of what happened—the predictable plotting and fictionalized approach may frustrate you. Netflix lists the show as a six-episode limited series; its official materials describe the episodes as 50 minutes or, in a later Tudum feature, hour-long, so those descriptions should be treated as rounded rather than an exact total running time.
Vergara stars and executive produces, and Andrés Baiz directed all six episodes. The cast also includes Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martín Rodríguez, Juliana Aidén Martinez, Vanessa Ferlito, and Karol G. Netflix lists the series on its platform, but availability can vary by location and date; check your local listing.
