The often-repeated claim that she made $46 million came from a parody story, according to AFP. The available figures concern the Greta Thunberg Foundation, which says it receives and donates award money and royalties; they are not a statement of Thunberg’s personal wealth.
Is Greta Thunberg a millionaire?
Her current net worth is not established by the sources available here. There is no reliable disclosure of her personal assets and liabilities that confirms she is a millionaire. Online estimates and viral claims should not be treated as verified financial records.
One prominent claim said she earned $46 million in a year and was the world’s highest-paid activist. AFP traced it to a satirical website and a fake magazine cover; a spokesperson for Thunberg said the allegation was untrue. The claim is not evidence of her income or wealth. AFP’s 2019 fact-check explains its origin.
What happened to the $46 million claim?
In September 2019, AFP reported that the viral story originated on Mediamass, a parody site, and was recirculated using a fake magazine cover. AFP quoted a spokesperson for Thunberg saying: “This post is not correct. Greta never receives payment for her activism. She does not accept fees for any appearances or media engagements. Furthermore, all of the income her family receives from their two books is donated to charity.” That is a dated statement from her spokesperson, as reported by AFP—not an independently verified account of her finances today.

How does the Greta Thunberg Foundation handle money?
The Foundation says it was founded in 2019 to distribute money connected to awards, royalties and donations to causes aligned with its mission. It says Thunberg’s parents originally founded it while she was a minor. Its FAQ describes the Foundation’s own role and finances; it is not an independent audit of Thunberg’s complete personal finances.
For The Climate Book, the Foundation says, “The copyright and earnings belong to the Foundation.” It says those funds go toward its mission or essential operating costs. The Foundation also says: “Greta is not a member of the Foundation’s board and she does not administer the Foundation, nor does she get paid by the Foundation.” These statements describe the Foundation’s arrangements, not Thunberg’s total income from every possible source. Foundation totals are not personal wealth
As of October 2025, the Greta Thunberg Foundation reported that it had received EUR 1,235,000 in awards and prize money and donated EUR 1,235,000, taking exchange rates and bank transfer fees into account. Those are the Foundation’s reported receipts and donations—not money shown to be held by Thunberg personally. The Foundation lists its grants and recipients on its “Where the money goes” page; its totals may change as it updates the records.
Does Greta Thunberg earn money from books or awards?
Her books and awards are relevant to the question, but their existence does not prove personal wealth. The Foundation says that the copyright and earnings from The Climate Book belong to it. A spokesperson’s 2019 statement, reported by AFP, said income Thunberg’s family received from their two books was donated to charity. Neither statement establishes her current personal balance sheet.

In an interview reported by The Independent on October 15, 2022, Thunberg said of award money, “I have won many awards that are worth even more, but I’ve donated all my money.” The report said she described her university student grant as her only income at that time. These are statements about 2022, not a current income disclosure. Read The Independent’s 2022 report.

Thunberg began her school strike outside the Swedish Parliament in August 2018, aged 15. The action grew into a global youth climate movement and brought awards, public attention and publishing opportunities. Penguin Books describes No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference as a 160-page collection of her speeches, published November 12, 2019. A book’s publication, however, does not establish how much its author personally received.
