His official website announced two days later that he had died after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Kihn was also a longtime Bay Area radio host, novelist and short-story editor.
How Greg Kihn died
An announcement posted on Greg Kihn’s official website said: “Greg lost his battle with Alzheimer’s disease on 8/13/24 at the age of 75.” The statement gives the date and cause but is not attributed to a named individual.
Why ‘Jeopardy’ and ‘The Breakup Song’ became his best-known songs
Kihn was born in Baltimore and moved to the Bay Area in the 1970s. He signed with local independent label Beserkley Records and released his first album in 1976. His music blended folk, classic rock, blues and pop; his band’s accessible power-pop sound brought him wider recognition in the early 1980s.
‘The Breakup Song’ was his first Hot 100 hit
“The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ’Em)” reached No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 in May 1981, according to the Los Angeles Times. It was Kihn’s first hit on the chart.

‘Jeopardy’ became his signature hit
Released in 1983, “Jeopardy” reached No. 2 on the Billboard singles chart, as reported by the Los Angeles Times, which described the video as an early MTV staple. The song was later parodied by “Weird Al” Yankovic as “I Lost on Jeopardy.” Kihn gave permission for the parody and appeared in its video.
Kihn’s career extended beyond his hit records
A long Bay Area radio career
Kihn was a familiar presence on Bay Area radio as well as onstage. The Los Angeles Times reported that he hosted mornings at San Jose station KUFX-FM (KFOX) for 17 years and retired there in 2018. The Bay Area Radio Museum & Hall of Fame gives a different timeline: it says he joined KUFX in 1996 and held the morning-show position until 2012. Those accounts conflict, so the exact end date of his radio tenure is not clear.

Novels, editing and later recordings

Kihn’s two signature singles explain his national recognition, but his work in Bay Area broadcasting and writing formed substantial parallel parts of his career.
