The performance took place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, as part of a ceremony marking the Super Bowl’s 60th anniversary. Former Super Bowl MVPs walked onto the field during the opening portion, accompanied by Green Day. The NFL described the band—Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool—as a hometown act formed in the East Bay area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Armstrong said, “We are super hyped to open Super Bowl 60 right in our backyard!” NFL announcement.

Why the performance felt unexpected
Armstrong sang the profanity in “American Idiot.” It was audible to people in the stadium, but NBC muted it on its telecast, creating a difference between the live audience’s experience and what viewers heard at home. There were also notable omissions from the set. Pitchfork reported that Armstrong skipped the second verse, where he has recently used the phrase “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda,” and left out the faux-representative announcement associated with “Holiday.” Those choices are relevant context, but they do not make the Super Bowl performance a political speech. Was Green Day the Super Bowl halftime act?
No. Green Day played the opening ceremony, before the game. Bad Bunny performed the official halftime show. The opening ceremony was also separate from the other pregame musical performances: Charlie Puth sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” Brandi Carlile performed “America the Beautiful,” and Coco Jones sang “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” The NFL announced the opening ceremony’s live carriage on NBC, Telemundo, Peacock and Universo. Pitchfork describes the songs as a medley of Green Day hits tied to the band’s 2004 album American Idiot. That studio album is a companion listen for anyone interested in the material, not a recording of the Super Bowl performance.
