Its cast and oddball premise have their appeal, but critics have disagreed over whether the film’s comedy, suspense and increasingly tangled plot come together.
What is Greedy People about?
Directed by Potsy Ponciroli and written by Mike Vukadinovich, the 2024 film follows rookie police officer Will Shelley (Himesh Patel), who moves with his pregnant wife, Paige (Lily James), to a small island town. On his first day, Will responds to what he thinks is a burglary; the call ends in a death. He and his partner, Terry Brogan (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), try to cover up what happened, while a large hidden stash of cash pulls more people into the fallout. Tim Blake Nelson and Uzo Aduba are also among the cast.

The setup gives the film two engines: a criminal mess that keeps widening, and the darkly comic mistakes and schemes that drive it. The central question is whether those elements reinforce one another or compete for attention.
Does the comedy and crime suspense work?
That balance is where the reviews diverge. Peter Bradshaw’s two-out-of-five-star review in The Guardian questioned the premise’s plausibility and criticized the comic execution. NDTV’s Saibal Chatterjee also found bright moments in the performances and humor, but faulted the pacing and chemistry.

By contrast, Tanzim Pardiwalla’s three-out-of-five-star Filmfare review praised the performances and framed the movie as an oddball crime comedy. The disagreement suggests a film whose appeal depends on how readily a viewer accepts an improbable chain of events and a tone that moves between criminal tension and absurdity.
Are the performances and pacing enough to carry it?
The ensemble is a point of interest across the film’s reception, but a strong cast does not settle the question of how well the story fits together. Filmfare’s positive take on the performances sits alongside NDTV’s reservations about chemistry and pacing. If you enjoy character-driven crime capers with an eccentric streak, that mix may be part of the fun; if you want tightly controlled suspense or consistently sharp comedy, the unevenness may be more noticeable.

Should you watch Greedy People?
Consider it a qualified recommendation for viewers who like dark, offbeat crime comedies and are willing to go along with an escalating series of bad decisions. The film’s premise and cast offer a clear entry point, but its reception is mixed on the plausibility of the plot and the way its humor and suspense mesh. It is less suited to someone seeking a grounded police thriller or a comedy whose jokes land consistently.

The Guardian’s September 18, 2024 review listed a digital-platform release from September 23, 2024; that is a historical release note, not confirmation of current access. India Today reported availability on Lionsgate Play in India from November 22, 2024, which likewise does not establish that it remains in the service’s catalog. Check current listings for your country before renting or subscribing.
