Greatest Eagles Songs: Beyond “Hotel California”

Beyond “Hotel California,” the Eagles’ best songs span early country-rock, Grammy-winning storytelling, No. 1 ballads, hard-driving rock, and late-period polish.

The Eagles’ greatest songs beyond “Hotel California” begin with “Take It Easy” and “Lyin’ Eyes,” then widen into “Desperado,” “One of These Nights,” “New Kid in Town,” “Life in the Fast Lane,” and “Heartache Tonight.”

Hotel California is the unavoidable reference point, but the Eagles’ best work is broader than one guitar finale—or even one album. The strongest route beyond it runs from sunlit early country-rock through meticulously arranged story songs and into the sharper, more skeptical material of the late 1970s.

This is an editorial listening order, not a claim of objective truth. It gives extra weight to songs carried by the Eagles’ 2024 career-spanning collection To The Limit, along with documented No. 1 status, Grammy recognition, and institutional recognition. The point is range: harmony records, narrative ballads, rockers, and album-closing statements—not twelve variations on Hotel California.

The essential dozen

  1. “Take It Easy”

Start here. It opens the Eagles’ 2024 career-spanning collection and establishes the relaxed, open-road sound that makes the later grandeur feel earned. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame includes it among the band’s signature hit catalog. If someone knows only Hotel California, this is the cleanest reset of their expectations.

  2. “Desperado”

Not every great Eagles song needs a radio-sized hook. The band’s 2024 collection includes both studio and live versions and identifies it as a fan favorite. Its value in this list is contrast: a patient, dramatic ballad that reveals how much of the group’s appeal came from restraint and arrangement as well as momentum.

  3. “The Best of My Love”

One of the No. 1 hits explicitly identified in the 2024 To The Limit announcement. Put it near the top of any beginner’s playlist if the attraction is the group’s blend of close harmonies and unhurried emotional force rather than its rock edge.

  4. “One of These Nights”

Another officially identified No. 1, and the title track of an Eagles album that received an Album of the Year nomination. It has the sleek nocturnal feel that points toward the later era without abandoning the band’s melodic center.

  5. “Lyin’ Eyes”

This is the most defensible award-backed selection beyond Hotel California. It won the 1976 Grammy for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and was also nominated for Record of the Year. Its narrative moves patiently, which is exactly why it works: the song makes room for character and consequence instead of rushing to a chorus.

  6. “Take It to the Limit”

A high-drama vocal showcase, included in both studio and live programming on the official career-spanning set. It earns its place not through a claim of technical supremacy but because it turns the Eagles’ harmony sensibility into something bigger, more exposed, and nearly arena-sized.

  7. “New Kid in Town”

An officially identified No. 1 hit, represented by both its studio recording and a Forum live recording on To The Limit. It is a useful reminder that the Hotel California era was never solely about its title track: this song carries a quieter, more uneasy kind of polish.

  8. “Life in the Fast Lane”

The necessary harder-driving entry. It appears in studio and live form on the 2024 collection and provides the bridge from the group’s country-rock roots to the more muscular sound associated with the Hotel California period.

  9. “Heartache Tonight”

One of the No. 1 hits named by the Eagles’ own 2024 announcement. Where several selections here reward close listening, this one delivers release and lift. It belongs late in a playlist, when the set needs to stop brooding and start moving.

  10. “I Can’t Tell You Why”

A later-era change of pace, included in both studio form and as a 1980 live recording on To The Limit. Its place on this list is structural as much as musical: it prevents an Eagles primer from treating the band as a fixed early-1970s sound.

  11. “The Last Resort”

The album-oriented choice. On the original 1976 Hotel California sequence, it closes the record after “Hotel California,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Life in the Fast Lane” have already appeared. Choose it when you want the scale and sequencing of the album rather than another isolated hit.

  12. “Tequila Sunrise”

A quieter early-period essential. The Rock Hall names it among the Eagles’ hit catalog, and the official collection includes a 1994 live performance. It is a valuable counterweight to the grander material: concise, reflective, and rooted in the band’s earlier palette.

Start here if you want… Listen in this order What it reveals
Early California country-rock “Take It Easy” → “Peaceful Easy Feeling” → “Witchy Woman” → “Tequila Sunrise” The loose, harmony-led foundation before the band’s sound became more elaborate.
Big narrative songs and ballads “Desperado” → “The Best of My Love” → “Lyin’ Eyes” → “Take It to the Limit” Why the Eagles were more than a singles band: pacing, storytelling, and vocal blend.
The world around Hotel California “New Kid in Town” → “Life in the Fast Lane” → “The Last Resort” The breadth of the 1976 album without letting its title track dominate the experience.
A late-period payoff “Heartache Tonight” → “I Can’t Tell You Why” → “In the City” How the catalog kept changing in texture and energy after the earlier breakthrough records.

Four excellent alternates

  • “Witchy Woman” and “Peaceful Easy Feeling” deepen the early, atmospheric side of the playlist; both are named by the Rock Hall among the Eagles’ hit catalog.
  • “Already Gone” is the more forceful early-period substitute. The Library of Congress essay on Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) names it among that compilation’s ten songs.
  • “In the City” is a good late-set addition. The Eagles’ 2024 announcement calls it a fan favorite, and the official collection includes it.
  • “The Long Run” works as an additional later-era stop; pair it with “Heartache Tonight” and “I Can’t Tell You Why” rather than using it to displace the twelve above.

Why the pre-Hotel California years matter

The early catalog is not merely a warm-up. In 2016, the Library of Congress added Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) to the National Recording Registry. Its accompanying essay specifically points to “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Witchy Woman,” “One of These Nights,” and “Already Gone” among the compilation’s selections. That recognition supports a simple listening conclusion: a serious Eagles overview should begin before 1976.

It also corrects a frequent chronology error. Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) was released on February 17, 1976, before the Hotel California album. It cannot include “Hotel California.” The similarly dated releases are often conflated because both belong to 1976, but they document two different moments in the band’s story.

Keeping “Hotel California” in proportion

There is no need to minimize the song. Grammy records it as the 1978 Record of the Year winner, credited to writers Don Felder, Glenn Frey, and Don Henley, with Bill Szymczyk as producer. In the United Kingdom it peaked at No. 8 on the Official Singles Chart, first charted on April 16, 1977, and spent ten weeks on the chart.

But “greatest Eagles songs” is a larger question. “Lyin’ Eyes” supplies Grammy-verified narrative craft; “Take It Easy” supplies the essential opening statement; “The Best of My Love,” “One of These Nights,” “New Kid in Town,” and “Heartache Tonight” supply the officially identified No. 1 peaks; “The Last Resort” supplies the album-scale ending. Together, they explain why the title track feels like a summit rather than the entire mountain.

The best physical starting point

For a single purchase that matches this guide, search for Eagles To The Limit The Essential Collection CD. The official announcement confirms a physical 3-CD edition and a 51-song track list, as well as a 6-LP edition. It is a better fit than buying Hotel California alone because it covers the early material, the 1976 orbit, late-period songs, and live recordings discussed here.

If the goal is specifically to own the 1976 album, the official Hotel California (180G Vinyl) is the narrower alternative—but it is not the best answer to a guide designed to move beyond the title song.

A 12-song first listen

For the most satisfying sequence, play the twelve essentials in the order listed above. It begins with open-road ease, moves through ballads and narrative songs, reaches the polished tension of the Hotel California era, then lands in later material without making chronology feel like homework. After that, add “Witchy Woman,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” “Already Gone,” and “In the City” according to the branch of the catalog you want to explore next.
