Great Photo, Lovely Life is a 2023 HBO documentary in which photojournalist Amanda Mustard returns to Pennsylvania to investigate sexual abuse attributed to her grandfather, a local chiropractor, and the family’s history of silence around it. Directed by Mustard and Rachel Beth Anderson, the 112-minute film brings together interviews, family photographs and home movies, including testimony from survivors and from Mustard’s grandfather.
What is Great Photo, Lovely Life about?
The documentary follows Mustard’s personal investigation into sexual abuse committed by her grandfather and the effects of that history on her family. Warner Bros. Discovery’s November 20, 2023 synopsis describes her return home to Pennsylvania to investigate what it calls “the multiple sexual abuse crimes committed by her grandfather.” The film presents the investigation through Mustard’s perspective and the accounts gathered for it; the available descriptions do not independently establish every allegation.
Interviews sit alongside family archive photographs and home movies. That material connects the present-day inquiry with the family’s past, while testimony from survivors and the grandfather brings different voices into the documentary’s account. The Rocky Mountain Women’s Film listing frames the film as less focused on the events themselves than on unexpressed anger and the harm of remaining silent; that is the festival’s interpretation of the film.
Who made the documentary?
Great Photo, Lovely Life was directed by photojournalist Amanda Mustard and filmmaker Rachel Beth Anderson. Mustard, Anderson and Luke Malone are credited as producers. HBO Documentary Films presented an Ark Media production. Warner Bros. Discovery described the film as an eight-year cinematic journey.
