The announcement also said that access to GTA Online was included with every copy, while the online world itself was scheduled to launch on October 1. In its November 2023 earnings release, Take-Two said Grand Theft Auto V had sold in approximately 190 million units to date, as the game and GTA Online marked their tenth anniversaries. “Sold in” is the company’s reported wording; this is a Take-Two figure, not a separately verified count of consumer purchases. How did GTA V reach a third console generation?
In 2022, Rockstar described the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S release as carrying the game into an “unprecedented third console generation.” The company announced visual and technical features for those versions, including modes up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second, improved textures and draw distances, HDR options, ray tracing, faster loading, 3D audio, and platform-specific features. The announcement is evidence of an extended release life across console generations. It does not establish that every edition has the same feature set: players should check the exact platform and edition in the relevant store listing before buying.
What kept GTA Online part of the story?
Rockstar’s March 2022 announcement said GTA Online had received “8+ years’ worth of gameplay additions delivered across over 40 unique updates.” That count describes the service at the time of the announcement; it should not be read as a current total. It documents a publisher continuing to invest in the online component, while the console releases brought the game to newer hardware. Axios’s 2023 anniversary coverage offers a broader interpretation, connecting the game’s legacy with changes in Rockstar as a studio and with audiences watching other people play. That is a retrospective framing, not proof that GTA V alone caused shifts in the company, the wider games industry, or streaming culture. Rockstar’s listing describes the campaign and online mode separately, and its next-generation announcement identifies features specific to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.
