Bitterbuck is a supporting character in the story set on a prison death row. Greene’s brief presence gives the role a human weight that makes it easy to remember; describing the performance as heartbreaking is an interpretation of its effect, not a claim that Greene was singled out for an Oscar or that a critical consensus has been established.
Was Graham Greene nominated for an Oscar for The Green Mile?
No. The Academy’s record for the 72nd Academy Awards lists four nominations for The Green Mile: Michael Clarke Duncan for supporting actor, plus Best Picture, sound, and screenplay based on previously published material. Greene was not one of the film’s nominees. See the Academy’s 2000 ceremony record.

The Green Mile adapts Stephen King’s work, with Darabont directing. The Academy has described Darabont’s work on King adaptations in its account of The Shawshank Redemption. King has also reflected on Darabont’s adaptation of that earlier story in an Academy interview.
The essential distinction is simple: Greene appears in the Oscar-nominated The Green Mile, but the film’s supporting-actor nomination went to Michael Clarke Duncan. Greene’s own Oscar nomination was for a different film, Dances With Wolves.
