Gracie Piscopo was Andre Rebelo’s partner and testified for his defence, but she was not accused of wrongdoing in the murder case. A jury convicted Rebelo of murdering his mother, Colleen; claims about insurance, finances and motive were the prosecution’s account, not findings about Piscopo’s knowledge or involvement.

What happened in the case?

Colleen Rebelo, 58, died at her home in Bicton, Western Australia, in May 2020. Her body was found in the shower. Her cause of death was not determined; trial reporting said asphyxiation could not be ruled out.

Date What happened Procedural status
May 2020 Colleen Rebelo died at her home. Her cause of death remained undetermined.
November 2022 Andre Rebelo was charged with murder, more than two years after his mother’s death. Initial reporting also described a fraud investigation and his relationship with Piscopo. Charge, not a conviction.
October–December 2024 Rebelo stood trial in the Supreme Court of Western Australia. He denied murdering his mother and pleaded guilty to fraud offences connected with attempts to claim insurance. After an eight-week trial and almost two days of deliberations, the jury found him guilty of murder in December.
April 2025 Justice Bruno Fiannaca sentenced Rebelo. Life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 25 years, backdated to November 2022.
September 2025 Rebelo’s lawyers said they intended to appeal, challenging the timeline and the reliability of evidence about whether he could have been present when his mother died. These were defence arguments, not appeal-court findings.
September 2026 A secondary news report said the appeal was withdrawn shortly before its scheduled hearing. No official court notice or authoritative court record confirming the withdrawal, or explaining a reason, was located in the reporting available here.

What did prosecutors argue about motive?

Prosecutors argued that Rebelo had taken out three life-insurance policies on his mother and stood to benefit from them. ABC News Australia reported a policy value of $1.5 million in its 2024 verdict coverage. In opening submissions, prosecutors also put his personal debt at around $40,000. Those figures and the theory that financial pressure was a motive belong to the prosecution’s case; they should not be treated as proof of what Piscopo knew.

Trial reporting also placed the couple’s social-media-facing lifestyle, including sponsored posts and brand deals, in that financial context. Those details do not establish Piscopo’s knowledge of the policies or of any alleged plan. The jury’s guilty verdict is an established court outcome; the prosecution’s account of motive remains attributed to prosecutors and trial reporting.

What was Gracie Piscopo’s role?

Piscopo was Rebelo’s partner at the time and the mother of their child. She testified for the defence in November 2024. ABC reported that she said Rebelo seemed “ordinary” that day and that she was largely unaware of the household’s finances because he handled the money. These are descriptions of her testimony, not independently established findings about what she knew or what happened.

ABC reported that Piscopo was not accused of wrongdoing in connection with the murder. Her presence in trial coverage about the couple’s lifestyle is not evidence of complicity. The available reporting does not establish that she knew about the insurance policies or the alleged plan.

What did the court say, and what remains uncertain?

At sentencing, Justice Fiannaca said: “The only reasonable inference is that you took your mother by surprise.” He also said: “You staged your mother in the shower to make it look like she had died of natural causes.” These were the sentencing judge’s statements about Rebelo and the murder.

The medical cause of Colleen Rebelo’s death was not determined. Rebelo testified at trial, “I wasn’t in any right state of mind,” and, “She just wanted to take care of us, that’s all.” Later, his lawyers argued that phone and hot-water timing evidence did not fit the prosecution’s account. Those appeal submissions were defence arguments; they did not establish that the death was natural. The later reported withdrawal of the appeal does not, by itself, resolve those disputed points.

Why was the case described as derailing a social-media star’s world?

The phrase in the original headline is a dramatic framing of the case’s effect on the public narrative around Piscopo, not a legal finding or a documented measure of how her life changed. The trial connected her relationship with Rebelo to testimony and prosecution discussion of lifestyle, but the available reporting does not establish a specific broader impact on her career or personal life. What is clear is the distinction between her role as a defence witness and Rebelo’s conviction: Piscopo was not accused, while the jury found Rebelo guilty.
