What happened to Grace VanderWaal’s mother?
Tina VanderWaal died after a 17-month battle with cancer, her obituary and a statement attributed to her husband, Dave VanderWaal, said. E! reported that the illness was breast cancer. The obituary published by the Georgetown Times through Legacy.com identifies her as Tina Marie VanderWaal, of Fripp Island, South Carolina, and gives her date of death as Monday, October 20, 2025.

Life & Style reported that Tina was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in June 2024. That more specific diagnosis and date were reported by the outlet; the obituary describes her illness as cancer.

Grace posted a tribute on October 21, according to TV Insider. The report reproduced her message: “Can’t yet find the words. I love you mommy. So much. I wake up and want to call you. I don’t know how to move forward without you. I love you.”

How Tina VanderWaal was remembered
Tina’s obituary remembers her for her creativity and work in jewelry and glass. She taught others to find their creative spark and made customized fine silver jewelry through Waal Studio. Her husband, David, and children Jakob, Olivia, and Grace are named in the obituary.
In a Facebook statement excerpt reported by E!, Dave described Tina as “the heart of our family, filling our lives with creativity, laughter, and love.” He also said she remained positive for herself and for others facing the same difficult journey during her 17-month cancer battle.
