Gorilla Monsoon was the ring name of Robert “Gino” Marella, an accomplished amateur wrestler who became a major professional wrestling star, a familiar television commentator and an influential figure behind the scenes at the company now known as WWE. He died in October 1999, but sources disagree on the exact date, and the material available here does not establish his cause of death.
Who was Gorilla Monsoon?
Born in Rochester, New York, Robert “Gino” Marella built a wrestling career across three arenas: competition in the ring, television commentary and company leadership. His imposing wrestling persona made him a recognizable performer; his later work helped make him a trusted voice and a presence in the organization beyond the cameras.
How did Marella go from amateur wrestling to the professional ring?
Marella had a strong foundation in collegiate wrestling. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame says he placed second in the heavyweight division at the 1959 NCAA tournament while representing Ithaca College. He later competed as Gorilla Monsoon in professional wrestling and held the WWWF United States Tag Team title, according to the Hall of Fame profile.
The shift from amateur competition to a larger-than-life professional character was only the beginning of his public career. WWE’s Hall of Fame listing describes Monsoon’s path as a move “from the ring to the mic,” recognizing his work both as a Superstar and as a commentator. WWE inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 1994.

Why do fans remember him as a commentator?
Monsoon’s broadcasting career gave audiences a different way to know him. FOX Sports’ biography describes him as a feared in-ring figure to one generation and a familiar broadcaster to later fans, and credits him with recurring “Gorilla-isms.” His commentary pairing with Bobby “The Brain” Heenan became especially celebrated: Monsoon’s steady, authoritative presence played naturally against Heenan’s quick-talking, often self-interested character.
The partnership helped turn commentary into part of the show’s character and storytelling, not merely a description of the action. Fans could follow the match while also hearing two distinct personalities react to it.

What did Monsoon do after wrestling?
Monsoon’s influence extended into company ownership and backstage coordination. FOX Sports says he became WWE President in 1995 and moved into a backstage coordinator role after relinquishing the post in 1997. Its profile also identifies his last public appearance as WrestleMania XV on March 28, 1999; that appearance date is attributed to FOX Sports.
GV Wire’s October 2025 interview with Monsoon biographer Brian R. Solomon adds context about the ownership transition. Solomon describes a difficult share sale and says Monsoon was ultimately retained by the company in an announcer role. GV Wire reports that Monsoon owned 20% of the company by 1982; this is a figure from the outlet’s account of Solomon’s discussion, rather than a claim independently established here through corporate records.

What is the “Gorilla position”?
In the same GV Wire interview, Solomon explains that the “Gorilla position” is the area just beyond the curtain where producers cue talent and coordinate matches. He says Monsoon performed that function from the 1970s. The term’s continued use offers a concise example of how Monsoon’s contribution reached beyond his on-screen roles; this origin account is Solomon’s, as reported by GV Wire.
When did Gorilla Monsoon die, and what was the cause?
The exact date is not consistent across the two reviewed profiles. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame gives October 6, 1999; FOX Sports gives October 4, 1999, and reports that he was 62. Both place his death in October 1999, but these sources do not resolve which day is correct.
