In an excerpt from his 2025 memoir, The Undying Light: A Personal History of Independent India, he recounts what his family later told him about being taken to Birla House after the shooting—and makes clear that he has no memory of the scene himself.
What the memoir recounts
In the account published by Scroll on April 24, 2025, the family’s day begins with ordinary routine. Then word arrives that “Bapuji” has been shot. The family goes to Birla House, where the young Gopalkrishna is placed on his mother’s lap near his grandfather’s body.
The passage also recounts that the child imitated Mahatma Gandhi’s calls for calm, including the phrase “Sab shant ho jaiye” and, as the family story has it, “Bapuji so rahe hein”—“Bapuji is sleeping.” These words are part of the memoir’s family-transmitted account, not a verified recording or independent transcript.
What Gopalkrishna Gandhi remembers—and what he does not
The crucial qualification is the author’s own: “I, of course, remember nothing of all this. Family lore’s stock of remembered ‘footage’ tells me this is what I said.” He was a toddler at the time, and the scene is presented as family lore passed down to him, not as a conscious eyewitness recollection.

The book behind the account
The Undying Light: A Personal History of Independent India is Gopalkrishna Gandhi’s 2025 memoir, published by Aleph Book Company. Google Books lists the book at 624 pages and identifies it with ISBN 9789365238204; those are bibliographic details, not a comparison of editions or a statement about current availability.
