New Google TV devices introduced from April 2025 are reported to require a dedicated remote button labeled “Free TV” or “Live TV”. Pressing it opens Google TV Freeplay, Google’s ad-supported hub for free on-demand titles and live channels. Android Authority reported the OEM requirement and said Google confirmed it; no public Google partner specification independently documenting the mandate has been identified.
What the “Free TV” button does
The button is a shortcut, not a new broadcast technology or a separate subscription. On a compatible Google TV remote, pressing Free TV or Live TV opens the platform’s Live tab and Freeplay experience. The exact label depends on the manufacturer and remote design.
Google’s stated rationale, quoted by Android Authority, is to provide “a consistent experience with quick access for users.” That is a product-design explanation, not a published measurement of button usage or viewing increases.
When the remote requirement applies
Android Authority reported that Google told its OEM partners the requirement would begin in April 2025 for new Google TV devices. The report does not establish that every manufacturer adopted the same hardware on every model, nor that existing remotes must be replaced. It also does not mean every Google TV device already sold has the button.

Because the evidence comes from a news report quoting Google’s confirmation rather than a public partner specification, check the exact model, market and included remote before buying. A device can run Google TV without having this particular shortcut.
What Freeplay offers now
In an August 11, 2026 announcement, Google said Freeplay had more than 10,000 free on-demand movies and shows and more than 300 free live channels. Those are Google’s figures at the time of that announcement, not a permanent guarantee that the catalog will remain at those levels.

“Free” means no subscription fee for the listed Freeplay programming. The service is ad-supported, so viewers should expect commercial interruptions. Google says access requires a Google Account and high-speed internet.
Availability and regional limits
Google’s announcement specifies availability on Google TV devices in the United States. Catalogs, channels and eligibility can change, and Google’s features documentation warns that some apps or content are unavailable in some countries. A button on a remote therefore does not by itself guarantee that Freeplay programming is accessible where you live.

Do not confuse Freeplay with the older “800 channels” figure
Google’s April 11, 2023 Live-tab announcement said the U.S. experience aggregated more than 800 free TV channels. That broader total combined Google-built channels with access to providers including Tubi, Plex, Haystack News and Pluto TV; some channels could require installing an app.
It is a different date and scope from the August 2026 Freeplay figure of more than 300 live channels. The 800-plus number should not be presented as Freeplay’s current channel count.

How the button fits with other live-TV sources
Google’s current features description refers to hundreds of free live channels from Freeplay, Tubi, Pluto and other sources, along with thousands of on-demand titles. Provider availability can depend on the app and country. Google’s Android TV support guidance says U.S. users can watch Google TV live channels without a charge, app installation, signup or subscription, while noting that other providers may require an app. That Android TV guidance should not be treated as a universal statement about every Google TV model or every country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What existing Google TV owners need to know
The cited reporting does not say that current owners must buy a new device to use Freeplay. If your television or streamer already runs Google TV, look for the Live tab or Freeplay entry in the interface and check whether your region is supported. The dedicated key is a convenience shortcut; the service and the hardware requirement are separate questions.

Should you buy a new device for the button?
Only consider new hardware if you also need a Google TV platform or your current television cannot access the supported interface. Google has documented Chromecast with Google TV and its voice remote as one route to Google TV, but the button requirement concerns new devices and their included remotes, not a guarantee that every listing has the same controller.
- Confirm that the product description says it runs Google TV, not a different smart-TV system.
- Inspect photos or the manufacturer’s specification for a dedicated Free TV or Live TV key.
- Check the sales region, because Google’s published Freeplay availability is U.S.-only.
- Verify which apps and providers are included in that model’s Live tab.
- Do not assume the shortcut creates ad-free viewing or unlocks paid services.
What remains unknown
Neither the cited report nor Google’s published figures establishes how many manufacturers complied, how many remotes carry the key, or whether the button increases Freeplay viewing. Google’s statement about “overwhelmingly positive feedback” is qualitative and does not include a usage or satisfaction measurement. Remote layouts, channel totals and geographic access may change as manufacturers and providers update their products.
The Bottom Line
Google TV’s dedicated Free TV/Live TV key is a hardware shortcut for Freeplay on new devices covered by the reported April 2025 OEM policy. It makes ad-supported programming easier to reach, but it does not make Freeplay universal, ad-free or available outside Google’s stated U.S. market.
