The company announced the end date on March 5, 2020, but did not give a reason in that announcement. The feature was a limited-time celebrity cameo, not a replacement for Assistant’s other voices.
What Google removed
The John Legend feature was a temporary celebrity voice integration for Google Assistant. It let Assistant answer some requests in a voice associated with Legend, with a few responses tailored to him. It did not remove Google Assistant, its ordinary voice options, or the ability to use voice commands.
Google had announced the cameo at Google I/O in May 2018. It became available in April 2019, and Google later set a firm end date. Contemporaneous coverage of Google I/O 2018 and the April 2019 launch document those earlier milestones.
The announcement and end date
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 2018 | Google announced the planned John Legend voice at Google I/O. |
| April 2019 | The voice became available. |
| March 5, 2020 | Google announced that the cameo would end. |
| March 23, 2020 | The scheduled final day of availability. |
Google’s March 5 post invited users to ask Assistant to “serenade me one more time.” A contemporaneous report on the removal covered the announcement and the feature’s end date.

What the cameo could do
Historical descriptions said users could ask ordinary Assistant questions and hear the cameo voice for responses about subjects such as weather or jokes. The integration also included Legend-related answers and special responses to music-themed prompts. Examples reported at the time included “Hey Google, serenade me” and a response involving “Are we just ordinary people?” These are historical examples, not commands guaranteed to work now.
Why did Google remove it?
Google announced when the voice would end but did not explain why in the cited announcement. Contemporaneous coverage said the reason was unclear. Claims that it ended because of a licensing dispute, cost, technical problems, or poor performance are not established by these sources.

Can you enable or restore it now?
The feature had a scheduled end date; the available sources do not document an official way to restore it after March 23, 2020. Instructions that promise to re-enable the cameo through a Google Home setting are not supported by the cited information. Be cautious of unofficial downloads, modified Assistant packages, or voice-cloning services presented as a way to recover Google’s feature. They are not an established official restoration method.
Assistant’s ordinary voice choices are a separate feature. Selecting a different standard voice would not restore the John Legend cameo.

Was it available outside the United States?
Contemporaneous reader comments included a report from a Canadian user whose Google Home said the voice could only be heard in the United States. That suggests the feature may have been U.S.-restricted, but a user report is not definitive documentation of availability in every country.

The cited coverage describes the feature as John Legend’s voice on Assistant but does not establish the precise recording, synthesis, or voice-modeling method. It is therefore more accurate to call it a celebrity voice integration than to label it an AI voice clone.
