In July 2025, Home and Away invited viewers to send Irene Roberts a personal video message, memory or goodbye note through its “Goodbye Irene” campaign. Lynne McGranger’s final episode as Irene aired on 19 August 2025; Seven later said thousands of fans had sent messages. The campaign was a lead-up to that farewell, not an invitation confirmed to be open today.
What was the Goodbye Irene campaign?
The campaign gave viewers a way to share a personal tribute to Irene, the character McGranger had played for 33 years. In July 2025, the invitation directed fans to goodbyeirene.com.au to submit a video message, memory or goodbye note. PerthNow reported that a handful of tributes would be selected for promotion around Irene’s final episodes.

The farewell was tied to Irene’s fictional Alzheimer’s diagnosis, which was prompting an online outpouring from viewers. That storyline concerned Irene, not McGranger.
When did Irene’s final episode air?
Irene’s farewell episode aired on Tuesday, 19 August 2025. Seven’s announcement the following day described the episode as having aired the previous night. McGranger had filmed her final scenes in March, according to PerthNow’s July report.

For McGranger, leaving the role meant closing a chapter that had lasted almost 33 years. In Seven’s 20 August release, she called it “bittersweet” and described it as “the best and longest gig of my life.” She also thanked fans for their “continued love and support.”
How many fans watched and sent messages?
Seven Network’s 20 August 2025 release said thousands of fans sent messages to McGranger through the campaign. It also called Irene’s farewell the series’ highest-rated episode of 2025. The figures below are figures published by Seven, not independently verified measurements.

Seven attributed its audience figures to TVMAP VOZ 5.0 overnight data, including spill, for 19 August 2025, with the year-to-date comparison against the same period in 2024. The release also said broadcast-only viewing for the farewell was the show’s highest since October 2021.
Why Irene mattered to viewers
McGranger told 7NEWS that she loved the comfort Irene had been able to bring people. She also described a character who could be quick to anger and quick to forgive. That combination helps explain why the farewell inspired personal memories as well as reactions to the storyline.

PerthNow reproduced individual fan comments including “It will be hard to say goodbye to Irene” and “Thank you Lynne for the years and years of wonderful memories.” These were examples of viewers’ responses, not a survey of audience opinion.

The campaign was presented as a time-limited invitation in the lead-up to the August 2025 farewell. The available reports do not establish whether the campaign site is currently active or whether it accepts submissions now. Seven’s later statement that thousands of fans had sent messages describes the completed campaign; it is not confirmation that the portal remains open.
