Goodbye Earth is a 2024 Korean drama series on Netflix about a community facing an asteroid impact projected to arrive in 200 days. Rather than focusing only on disaster spectacle, the 12-episode story follows people trying to protect one another and preserve ordinary life as social order breaks down.
What is Goodbye Earth about?
The Korean Peninsula is in the asteroid’s projected impact zone. As the countdown begins, martial law and disorder reshape life in the fictional South Korean city of Woongcheon, near Seoul. The 200-day timeline is the series’ fictional premise, not a real-world prediction. Netflix’s announcement and its series overview describe a crisis involving escaped prisoners, cult activity, and attempts to reach safer places.
At the center is Jin Se-kyung, a middle school teacher whose efforts to protect students are shaped by the death of a student kidnapped during a protest. The story also follows a priest confronting secrets in his church and a military officer trying to protect people from traffickers targeting students. The question is not simply who can survive, but how people choose to live when the future seems short.
Director Kim Jin-min told The Korea Herald, in a statement quoted by Netflix Tudum: “It’s not about their struggles for survival, but something that throws a question, ‘What would you do [when you have 200 days to live]?’”

Is Goodbye Earth based on a book?
Yes. Netflix identifies Japanese author Kōtarō Isaka’s novel Shūmatsu no Fūru as the source. Netflix Tudum renders the title as The Fool at the End of the World and describes the novel as a collection of stories. The television series is an ensemble drama; the available official description does not establish specific scene-by-scene changes, so it is best understood as an adaptation rather than assumed to be a close retelling.
Screenwriter Jeong Seong-joo described the series, in a statement quoted by Netflix Tudum, as paying “homage to the indomitable spirit of those who persevere through their last days on Earth.”
