Sam Rockwell gives its frantic opening a compelling center; whether the film’s looping, episodic story can sustain that energy for roughly 134–135 minutes is a harder question. It hits hard in bursts, though its ideas and detours do not always cohere.
What is Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die about?
A man claiming to be from the future arrives at a Los Angeles diner and tries to recruit its patrons to resist an AI apocalypse. Social-media dependence is part of the threat in the official premise, which promises a “gonzo” adventure rather than a sober forecast of where technology is headed. The film treats that premise as fuel for a fast-moving, often absurdist dark comedy.
Gore Verbinski directs from a screenplay by Matthew Robinson. Rockwell leads an ensemble that includes Haley Lu Richardson, Michael Peña, Zazie Beetz, Juno Temple, and Asim Chaudhry. The story begins as a recruitment mission, then branches into character-focused episodes and fable-like backstories. A time-loop element helps link those excursions, but the structure also makes the film feel more like a series of escalating set pieces than one steadily tightening plot.
Does the performance and style hold the film together?
Sam Rockwell makes the opening compelling
Rockwell plays the future claimant with an urgent, ragged charisma that suits a character asking strangers to believe an extraordinary story. The performance gives the film a human point of entry even as the premise races toward exaggerated visions of technological catastrophe. The supporting cast adds different shades to the diner ensemble, and the character-focused detours give several performers room to shape the film’s world.

Verbinski favors kinetic excess over restraint
The film’s energy is part of its argument: it throws the audience into a noisy, overstimulated adventure rather than offering a measured lecture about screens or artificial intelligence. Action and grotesque comic images amplify that approach. The trade-off is that the film keeps changing gears. Its episodic structure can deliver memorable individual sequences, but not every excursion advances the central story with equal force.
How effective is its AI and social-media satire?
The target is recognizable: a culture shaped by compulsive feeds, distraction, and fears about what increasingly capable technology might mean. The film makes those concerns vivid through comic exaggeration, not evidence-based prediction. Its fictional apocalypse should not be read as a claim about what real-world AI will do.

That distinction also explains the film’s unevenness. The premise gives it a sharp, immediately legible hook, but the story has many ideas competing for attention. The result is more successful as a burst of satirical energy than as a sustained exploration of any one concern. Verbinski told Moviefone of Robinson’s opening monologue, “I thought Matthew’s opening monologue scared me, but also was brilliant.” That is a reaction to the screenplay’s opening, not a measure of how fully the finished film develops its themes.
What are the runtime, rating, and content concerns?
Universal lists the runtime as 2hr 15min; the Associated Press reports 134 minutes. The difference is a minute, not evidence of a distinct version. Universal and AP list an R rating for pervasive language, violence, some grisly images, and brief sexual content. This is an adult-oriented dark comedy with violent and disturbing moments, not a gentle family sci-fi adventure.

Is Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die worth watching?
It is a good fit if you want a high-concept comedy that moves quickly between science-fiction ideas, action, grotesque humor, and ensemble episodes—and if Rockwell’s volatile screen presence is a draw. The film’s opening and its bursts of visual invention make a strong case for its unruly approach. The counterargument is length: at more than two hours, the detours and competing ideas can make the whole feel wayward. The Associated Press’s Jake Coyle praised the film’s bonkers charm and Rockwell’s “stumbling charm,” while also judging it too long and awarding 2.5 stars out of four.
Rotten Tomatoes showed an 82% Tomatometer from 237 critic reviews and an 84% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 verified ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026. The platform’s consensus calls it “A gleeful high-concept comedy with a serious message at its core.” Those are changing platform snapshots, not a fixed verdict or a representative survey of every viewer; the split over pacing and the film’s crowded ideas remains relevant to a prospective viewer.
