Goldie Hawn’s answer to what makes a relationship work is “Freedom.” In remarks quoted in January 20, 2026 coverage of a podcast preview, she described her long relationship with Kurt Russell as one built on independence, respect, admiration and continuing attraction—not on marriage. That is Hawn’s personal account, not a guaranteed formula for other couples.
What does Hawn call the secret to their relationship?
Asked what makes a relationship work, Hawn answered, “Freedom,” according to Parade’s January 20, 2026 report and The Daily Beast’s January 20, 2026 coverage of the podcast preview.
She explained that freedom as having a separate sense of self rather than becoming indistinguishable from a partner: “It’s a freedom of self. It’s a freedom of basically not melding into somebody else, when you’re copacetic on certain areas, and you have freedom.” Her point was not that partners should avoid closeness, but that closeness need not require giving up independence.
What else did Hawn say matters?
Hawn spoke about respect and admiration for Russell, describing him as an amazing person. She also said, “I’m also very sexually attracted to him.” Taken together, her comments point to a partnership in which personal autonomy exists alongside affection and attraction; she did not present these as a ranked list or a universal prescription.

Why didn’t Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell marry?
They have not married. Hawn said marriage would not have changed their partnership after 42 years together: “Even if we did get married, it wouldn’t make any difference because it’s 42 years now.” That duration was the figure in the January 2026 coverage, not a rolling count that should be repeated as current without confirming an anniversary date.
In an earlier interview with ITV’s Loose Women, Hawn expressed a similar view: “I chose to stay, Kurt chose to stay and we liked the choice. What is marriage going to do?” The page’s displayed date does not include a year, so it does not establish when that interview took place.

Hawn used a bird-and-cage metaphor to describe the value she places on independence: “And you leave the cage door open, I may never fly out. But if you close that door, for my freedom and my independence, I would probably take all my feathers off.” In her telling, the ability to choose to stay matters; commitment is not made stronger by making a partner feel confined.
