They first crossed paths while working on Disney’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band. The precise year depends on whether a source is dating the encounter or the film: Vogue’s relationship timeline gives 1966 for their meeting, while Biography.com describes the film as Hawn’s 1968 feature debut. Hawn later recalled that she was 21 and Russell was 16, and that she found him charming but too young.

Their romance came years later, after they reconnected while making Swing Shift. Biography.com dates the beginning of their relationship to 1983; Vogue says they began dating publicly in 1984. Those accounts distinguish the relationship’s start from when it was publicly acknowledged, rather than establishing one exact day.
How their family grew
Hawn and Russell welcomed their son, Wyatt, in 1986. Their household also brought together children from earlier relationships: Hawn’s children Oliver and Kate Hudson, and Russell’s son Boston, from his marriage to Season Hubley. They therefore formed a blended family as well as raising a child together.

Why they have never married
Hawn has explained that marriage is not what makes a relationship lasting. In a 2015 interview with Porter, quoted by ABC News, she emphasized compatibility, communication, mutual intention and retaining a sense of self. She also described disagreement as something partners need to learn to handle, not eliminate. Her point was personal: she and Russell have chosen a relationship without marriage, not offered a universal prescription.
In a 2023 CNN interview, as reported by Vogue, Hawn put the question directly: “Why should we get married? Isn’t that a better question?” Her comments explain how she thinks about their choice; they do not establish that marriage has the same meaning or consequences for every couple.

Their relationship on screen and in public
Hawn and Russell’s shared filmography includes Swing Shift and Overboard (1987). Their working partnership is part of the story of how they reconnected, but their public accounts of lasting together focus on their life beyond the films.
At their 2017 Hollywood Walk of Fame double-star ceremony, Russell praised Hawn, saying, “There’s no one else I’d rather be next to for all of that than Goldie.” He added, “Goldie, to you, I owe my wonderful life. Simply put, Goldie, I cherish you.” Vogue and Biography.com report the remarks.
