The event was reported by Scroll.in on March 20, 2024, which is the only contemporaneous account this article relies on. The report confirms the appointment, the station, the one-day term and the parade’s purpose. It does not give the exact date of the parade, an official police statement, or any measured result.
What was reported
According to Scroll.in, Godzilla was appointed chief of Ikebukuro Police Station for one day. The appointment was described as a publicity stunt tied to road safety, and the monster took part in a parade intended to make the public more aware of traffic safety. The article embeds a social media post dated March 19, 2024.

Why a costumed appearance is used for road safety
Public safety campaigns in Japan, as elsewhere, often use mascots, celebrities or fictional characters to draw attention to a message that people tend to ignore when it is delivered as a warning. A one-day “chief” role is a common format for this: it gives a local station a recognizable face for a parade and a reason for press coverage. The Scroll.in report frames the Godzilla appearance in exactly these terms, as a means of promoting traffic safety rather than as an enforcement action. Nothing in the available reporting shows whether the campaign changed behavior, so any claim of impact would go beyond the evidence.
How to verify this story
- Start with the Scroll.in article dated March 20, 2024, which is the source for every detail above.
- Check the embedded social post dated March 19, 2024, to see what the station or organizer published at the time.
- If you need the parade date, look for a notice from Ikebukuro Police Station or the Metropolitan Police Department, since an official announcement would be the most reliable record.
- Treat any figures about accidents or outcomes as unverified unless they come from a police or government statistical release.
