“As we release Twisters into the world today, I just wanted to look up and tip my hat to the legend that is Bill Paxton. A great friend of mine who saw poetry in the natural world. His boots are impossible to fill, but this life is all about chasing the greats.”
The photograph Powell shared appeared to be a behind-the-scenes image from Red Wing, the 2013 film in which he and Paxton appeared together, according to Good Morning America’s July 19, 2024 report.

How were Powell and Paxton connected?
They worked together on Red Wing (2013). Powell’s remembrance describes Paxton not only as a screen legend but as a friend, and the shared photograph linked the tribute to their time on that film.
How are Twisters and Twister connected?
Paxton starred opposite Helen Hunt in Twister (1996), the storm-chasing film that preceded the new release. Universal described Twisters as “a current-day chapter” of the earlier film; Good Morning America characterized it as a standalone sequel. It is not a remake.

The new story follows a storm-chasing expert and a storm-chasing media personality who join forces to track a violent storm system over Oklahoma. The 1996 Twister earned nearly $500 million worldwide and received two Academy Award nominations, figures reported by Good Morning America in 2024.
Paxton’s legacy in the original film
Paxton died in February 2017 from complications of surgery, as reported by Good Morning America. His role in Twister gives Powell’s release-day salute an added connection to the franchise: the new film arrived in theaters while audiences were revisiting a story Paxton helped make memorable.
