This is a curated listening sequence, not an official ranking: it puts the songs that best show Campbell’s range as a singer and guitarist alongside selections that mark important moments in his career.
Early recordings and the breakthrough
-
“Turn Around, Look at Me”
Campbell’s first pop hit, in 1961, introduced the clear, expressive vocal style that would carry him across country and pop. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum identifies it as his first pop hit (Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum biography).
-
“Kentucky Means Paradise”
Recorded with the Green River Boys, this was Campbell’s first recording to reach the country charts, according to the Hall of Fame. It offers an early glimpse of the country side of a career that would soon reach a much broader audience.
-
“Universal Soldier”
This early solo-era selection appears on the official four-CD The Legacy [1961–2017] track list. It adds a different shade to the opening stretch before the signature late-1960s recordings.

-
“By the Time I Get to Phoenix”
Written by Jimmy Webb, this recording became part of the creative partnership that shaped Campbell’s late-1960s sound. It is also among Campbell’s recordings recognized by the Grammy Hall of Fame, according to his official biography (Glen Campbell official biography).
-
“Wichita Lineman”
Another Webb composition, “Wichita Lineman” is one of Campbell’s most enduring performances: intimate in delivery, yet expansive in feeling. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum highlights it among his essential hits, and the official biography lists it among his Grammy Hall of Fame singles.
The late-1960s run and its wider world
-
“Dreams of the Everyday Housewife”

-
“Galveston”
Webb wrote this 1969 crossover recording, which belongs alongside “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Wichita Lineman” as a central part of Campbell’s late-1960s work. Together, the three songs make a compelling way to hear the range of Webb’s writing through Campbell’s voice.
-
“Where’s the Playground, Susie”
A further Webb-associated-era selection, this song is documented on the official anthology track list. It extends the late-1960s sequence beyond the best-known trio.
-
“True Grit”
Campbell sang the title song for the film in which he also appeared. His official biography notes that the performance was nominated for an Academy Award, linking his music career to his screen work.

“Adiós”
This title from the final-session era appears on the album released in 2017, according to Campbell’s official biography. It closes the sequence with a late-career recording rather than returning to the hits.
How to hear the career arc
For a focused introduction, begin with the three Webb compositions—“By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” “Wichita Lineman,” and “Galveston”—then compare them with “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Southern Nights.” That contrast makes the shift from the late-1960s songwriting partnership to Campbell’s 1970s country-pop stardom especially clear.
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum reports that between 1967 and 1980 Campbell had 30 Top Twenty country hits and 19 Top Forty pop records. Those figures are the museum’s account of his chart reach during that period. Its biography also highlights “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “Country Boy (You Got Your Feet in L.A.),” and “Southern Nights” among his major hits.
Where to find a broader selection
The four-CD The Legacy [1961–2017] is a career-spanning anthology, with an official track list that documents recordings from across Campbell’s career (official Legacy box-set announcement; official store track list). It is broader than this curated 20-song sequence, not a disc containing these exact selections.
The MCA Official Store also lists a ten-track CD, 20th Century Masters: Best of Glen Campbell, with songs including “Rhinestone Cowboy,” “Wichita Lineman,” “Galveston,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “Gentle on My Mind.” The listing marks it sold out, so availability should not be assumed (MCA Official Store listing).
