Archival records place Joan Bennett Kennedy in photographs from 1958, 1960, 1961 and 1963, capturing a new member of the Kennedy family in both public and family settings. Joan was a model and classically trained pianist; she married Ted Kennedy in 1958. The images below are identified through institutional catalogs, whose dates and descriptions vary in precision.
1958: Joan Bennett Kennedy at the Bronxville Country Club
The Briscoe Center for American History catalogs a 1958 photograph titled “At the Bronxville Country Club, The Senator dances with the newest member of the Kennedy family, Joan Bennett Kennedy.” The title identifies Joan dancing with the senator at the country club. The catalog dates the image to 1958 but does not establish the occasion, so it is best viewed as a documented family scene rather than assigned to a particular celebration.

November 1960: the day after the presidential election
A color photograph in the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum’s collection shows Kennedy adults the day after the presidential election in November 1960. The record names Joan among those pictured and says the Kennedy estate donated the photograph in 1965. It offers a precise relation to the election, but not an exact calendar date in the information cited here.

August 1961: Joan represented in a Kennedy family montage
A White House Photographs record identifies Joan among the people represented in Cecil Stoughton’s “Montage photo of the Kennedy Family.” The folder is dated August 1961, but the item is undated within that month. Because this is a montage, it should not be captioned as one single scene photographed on a specific day.

1963: Joan Kennedy at the piano in Hyannis Port
The International Center of Photography catalogs a Jacques Lowe photograph of Rose Kennedy and Joan Kennedy at a piano with Shriver children in Hyannis Port. The description documents a music-and-family setting, but gives no more precise date than 1963. The catalog does not identify what music was being played or the specific occasion.

How to find more Joan Kennedy photographs
In May 2025, the JFK Library announced that photographs, scrapbooks and albums in its Kennedy Family Collection had been digitized and made accessible online. The collection covers Kennedy and Fitzgerald family materials, with records spanning 1878 through 1980. The announcement reports approximately 6,000 photographic prints, negatives, transparencies and other graphic materials, including about 1,700 nitrate negatives, and more than 8,600 scanned images of graphic materials. It also describes 52 bound volumes represented by approximately 8,000 scanned pages.
Those figures describe the collection as a whole, not Joan Kennedy’s photographs. The library’s digitization archivist, Laura Kintz, noted that some image sources and contexts were unclear and that descriptions reflect what could be seen. Check each item’s own record before relying on a name, date or occasion.
