Gladiator II is Ridley Scott’s 2024 sequel to Gladiator, centered on Lucius, a man forced into Rome’s Colosseum after his home is conquered. It premiered on November 22, 2024. Here are the film’s story, cast, release details and notable production facts.
What is Gladiator II about?
Set in ancient Rome, the sequel follows Lucius, played by Paul Mescal. He witnessed the death of Maximus as a child; years later, after Rome’s ruling twin emperors conquer his home, Lucius is forced to fight in the Colosseum. Paramount’s synopsis frames his struggle around the future of the Empire and Rome’s glory. Paramount+’s synopsis provides the studio’s spoiler-light outline.
In an Associated Press interview, Scott described the story’s starting point as “a good logical stepping stone into who next, who survived and where did he go.” The sequel shifts its focus to Lucius, a grandson of former emperor Marcus Aurelius. In the story, Macrinus mentors Lucius as a gladiator while pursuing power in Rome. The AP interview with Scott discusses the film’s continuation of the original story.

Paramount’s release names the ensemble, while the AP identifies Pascal’s character as Roman general Marcus Acacius. Ridley Scott directed. David Scarpa wrote the screenplay, based on characters created by David Franzoni; the story is credited to Peter Craig and David Scarpa. Paramount’s release lists the cast and creative credits.

When did it come out, and how long is it?
Paramount Global Content lists the premiere date as November 22, 2024. Paramount+ lists the runtime as 2 hours 28 minutes and the classification as R. Paramount’s release specifies that the rating is for “strong bloody violence.” These details are from the studio’s listings and release materials. Where was it announced to stream?
Paramount announced that Gladiator II would begin streaming on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on January 21, 2025. That announcement establishes the planned launch in those two territories; it does not confirm the film’s current catalog status, availability elsewhere, or whether a subscription or rental is required now. What did Ridley Scott say about making it?
Scott told the Associated Press, “We built the Colosseum 40% full scale.” He said constructing the set in Malta was cheaper than relying on blue screen for every shot. The scale figure and cost comparison are Scott’s remarks in the AP interview, not an independently reported production measurement. Read the AP interview for his account of the production choices.
Scott also said, “Sequels are always kind of suspect,” before explaining how the team found a logical continuation through Lucius. That was a comment on approaching a sequel, not a judgment of the finished film.

What were its early box-office and awards milestones?
Associated Press reported that the film opened with $55.5 million in domestic ticket sales in 2024. AP also reported, citing Comscore, that 61% of opening-weekend ticket buyers were male; that figure describes that opening-weekend audience, not viewers overall. The AP box-office report provides the dated figures.
In a January 17, 2025 release, Paramount said the film had passed $455 million in global box office by that point. The studio also reported a 96% lift in viewership for the original Gladiator during the 28 days following the sequel’s release; that was a claim about the original film, not the sequel. The same release listed Gladiator II among the National Board of Review’s Top Ten Films of 2024 and reported nominations for two Golden Globes, four Critics’ Choice Awards, three BAFTA Film Awards and one Screen Actors Guild Award. The revenue and viewership numbers are studio-reported snapshots, and the award counts refer to nominations as of that release. Paramount’s January 2025 announcement contains those figures.
