Spoilers through the Season 2 finale. Season 2 brings Ginny and Austin back to Wellsbury with separate reasons to distrust Georgia: Ginny knows Georgia killed Kenny, while Austin has discovered that Georgia hid his letters from Gil. As Ginny and Georgia begin to reconnect, Georgia’s past catches up with her—and she is arrested at her wedding to Paul after Austin witnesses her suffocate Tom Fuller. Season 3 premiered on Netflix on June 5, 2025, and picks up immediately after the arrest.
Why Ginny and Austin left—and what brings them home
Season 2 begins a couple of weeks after Ginny and Austin leave Wellsbury. Ginny has learned that Georgia killed her ex-husband Kenny. Austin, meanwhile, discovers that Georgia intercepted his letters from his father, Gil. Their anger comes from different secrets, but both children feel that Georgia has taken choices away from them.
They stay with their father, Zion, before Ginny returns to Wellsbury. Part of the pull is Marcus: Ginny wants to be near him, even as she remains isolated from Max and parts of the MANG friend group. Georgia wants the family back under one roof and continues building a future with Paul. Her efforts to protect her children, however, often slide into controlling what they know and decide.
Ginny’s self-harm brings her and Georgia into the same conversation
Zion learns that Ginny has been burning herself. Therapy becomes part of the plan for her to return home, giving Ginny a place to address distress she has kept hidden. Georgia later discovers the self-harm and joins one of Ginny’s therapy sessions. She begins to understand that Ginny’s vulnerability is not a weakness, and the two share an apology and a more candid conversation.

The session marks a shift in their relationship, not a tidy resolution. Netflix says a licensed psychologist weighs in on every script, and Mental Health America reviews scripts and content involving mental-health storylines. The series presents Ginny’s self-harm as a serious part of her family story rather than a problem that disappears after one conversation.
Ginny and Marcus care about each other, but break up
Ginny and Marcus start dating, but their relationship cannot carry Marcus’s worsening depression. Marcus ends things because he does not have room for someone else’s pain while he is struggling. In the breakup scene, he tells Ginny, “I don’t have room for anyone else’s pain right now.” That is Marcus’s dialogue, not a comment by actor Felix Mallard.

Ginny initially reads Marcus’s withdrawal as rejection. Max explains that Marcus has experienced similar episodes before, helping Ginny understand that his struggle has a history of its own. Ginny and Marcus finish the season as friends. The breakup hurts, but the story does not frame it as Ginny having failed to fix or support him.
Gil’s return puts Georgia’s past in the present
Austin’s father, Gil, returns from prison seeking a place in his son’s life. Flashbacks reveal that Gil abused Georgia. She framed him for embezzlement to keep him away, and the show establishes that he had in fact embezzled money. His return puts Austin between his parents and makes Georgia’s history an immediate threat to the family.

When Gil attacks Georgia, Austin shoots him in the arm. Georgia can no longer keep her past and the danger Gil poses from Paul if she wants to build a life with him. She tells Paul about her criminal history; he still agrees to marry her.
Georgia and Cynthia’s connection leads to Tom Fuller’s death
Georgia and Cynthia move from rivalry toward a tentative friendship. Cynthia blocks Gil from living nearby, and she confides in Georgia about the strain and grief of living with her husband, Tom, who is comatose. Georgia suffocates Tom with a pillow. She believes she is ending the family’s suffering, but that belief is her rationale, not an objective judgment about the act.

Austin witnesses the killing from a closet. His presence turns Georgia’s attempt to keep the truth buried into another secret shared with one of her children.

Nick tells private investigator Gabriel Cordova that Georgia was with Cynthia and Tom when Tom died. Cordova contacts the police. Georgia marries Mayor Paul, but during the reception police arrest her for Tom’s murder. Austin chases after her as she is taken away.

The arrest is the season’s final cliffhanger. Netflix’s Season 3 announcement says the next season picks up immediately after it; creator and executive producer Sarah Lampert said the team knew where it wanted Season 3 to go while developing Season 2: “When we had to develop the storyline for Season 2, we knew exactly what we wanted Season 3 to be.”
