No definitive, independently verified figure for George Michael’s personal net worth is established by the available records. Reports have cited £98 million in 2019 and an estimated 1.18 billion Swedish kronor in 2016, but those are differently sourced estimates—not confirmed, interchangeable measures of his wealth or the final value of his estate.
What was George Michael worth when he died?
The clearest answer is that the public figures are estimates reported by media outlets, not a verified personal net-worth total. In 2019, Austrian newspaper Kurier reported a fortune of £98 million, attributing the figure to The Sun and saying court papers had been issued on 30 May. Kurier’s report is secondary coverage; the underlying grant was not directly reviewed.
A 2016 report by Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet put his estimated fortune at about 1.18 billion Swedish kronor. It mentioned real estate, song rights and valuable art, and drew on other reporting for some inheritance details. It was a contemporaneous estimate, not a probate figure.
| Reported amount | Source and date | What the report describes | Verification limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| £98 million | Kurier, 2019 | A reported fortune figure attributed to The Sun and associated with court papers issued on 30 May. | Secondary reporting; the grant was not directly reviewed, and the report does not establish a complete asset breakdown or final distribution. |
| About 1.18 billion Swedish kronor | Aftonbladet, 2016 | An estimated fortune, with references to real estate, song rights and art. | A media estimate, not a probate total; it is not directly comparable with the later report. |
The reports differ in date, currency and description, and the difference is not resolved by the available records. Neither figure should be treated as his lifetime peak wealth, cash holdings or the amount ultimately received by beneficiaries.

Why a net-worth estimate is not the same as an estate value
“Net worth,” a probate estate total and the amount eventually distributed answer different questions. Personal net worth is an estimate of assets minus liabilities at a particular point. Probate figures relate to an estate being administered. The final distribution comes after the estate’s representatives deal with debts, taxes and administration.
The UK government’s estate valuation guidance describes identifying assets and debts, then estimating and reporting their value. The probate service guidance says a grant shows gross and net estate figures but does not provide an asset-by-asset breakdown. Those totals alone therefore cannot establish what particular property, rights or other assets were included, or the final amount distributed.
Rank #2
George Michael’s matching grant and final estate accounts are not established by the records cited here. His exact official gross and net probate figures, complete asset breakdown and final distributed value consequently remain unverified.
What has been reported about his beneficiaries?
Kurier reported that his sisters Yioda and Melanie were expected to receive the largest share, including two London properties, and that his father was reported to inherit a stud farm. These are secondary reports about the will; the underlying will was not reviewed, so the details should not be treated as independently confirmed terms.

As general context, UK government guidance on estate administration explains that personal representatives manage estate assets, settle debts and taxes, and distribute what remains according to the will or applicable law. This describes the process, not George Michael’s specific final accounts.

A report in The Guardian on 7 March 2017 reproduced a statement from Darren Salter, senior coroner for Oxfordshire: “Inquiries into the death of George Michael have been concluded and the final postmortem report received.” That statement provides dated context; it does not verify a wealth or estate figure.

For a more definitive probate figure, the relevant grant record would be needed. The official probate service explains that sealed copies can be ordered and that a grant provides gross and net totals, not a breakdown of assets. Even those totals would not, by themselves, be the final sum distributed to beneficiaries.
