Some Genshin Impact players prefer Barbara’s older English voice lines because they remember them as more energetic and cheerfully encouraging. HoYoverse confirmed that it amended some of her combat and character-profile audio in Version 1.3, but fan reactions were divided, and the patch notes did not explain why the files changed.
What changed in Barbara’s English voice?
HoYoverse’s Version 1.3 update notes, published for the February 2021 update, say: “Amends audio files for some of Barbara’s voice-over lines during combat and on her character profile screen.” The notice confirms that some audio files were amended; it does not identify every affected line or describe the creative reason.
Contemporaneous reports and player discussions characterized the newer delivery as calmer, flatter, or less energetic than the earlier one. Those are listeners’ impressions, not measurements of vocal intensity or pacing. The documented change concerns specific combat and profile-screen lines, not a stated overhaul of every Barbara voice line.
Was Barbara recast?
No recast is established by the cited sources. A February 2021 TechTimes report quoted English voice actor Laura Stahl saying, “Y’all, it’s still me.” The evidence supports describing the change as amended audio or a changed performance, not as a confirmed replacement of Stahl.

Why do some fans prefer the older delivery?
For listeners who favor the earlier version, the key difference is its perceived enthusiasm. They describe the older combat calls as more lively and encouraging, qualities they associate with Barbara’s cheerful idol and healer persona. If her battle lines are part of what makes playing her feel uplifting, a more subdued delivery can seem to lose some of that characterful energy.
That is a matter of taste, not an objective verdict on which recording is better. Other players liked the softer tone or felt it suited Barbara. Contemporaneous PCGamesN coverage and HoYoLAB discussion show the change drew notice, while another HoYoLAB discussion captures uncertainty and mixed opinions. Discussion threads show what participating fans said, not what the entire player base thinks.

Did HoYoverse explain the change?
The cited Version 1.3 notice states that audio files were amended but gives no reason. The Version 1.4 update notes do not add an explanation. Claims that the change was intended to make Barbara’s combat lines match her story scenes should therefore be treated as fan interpretation, not confirmed developer intent.
