Genoveva Casanova denied having a romantic relationship with then-Crown Prince Frederik after a Spanish magazine published photographs of them together in Madrid in November 2023. She threatened legal action over the coverage and later sued the magazine. A November 2025 report by Ritzau said a judge dismissed her defamation and privacy claims; the allegation itself was not established as true.
What prompted Casanova’s legal threat?
On 8 November 2023, Spanish magazine Lecturas published photographs of Casanova and Frederik in Madrid and suggested a romantic connection, according to Avisen.dk’s contemporaneous report. The photographs showed the two together; they do not establish that an affair occurred.
The same report said Casanova was prepared to sue if the magazine did not withdraw its claims. Denmark’s royal household responded: “Vi udtaler os ikke om rygter og insinuationer,” translated as “We do not comment on rumours and insinuations.”
What did Genoveva Casanova say about Frederik?
In a statement reported by Kurier on 31 January 2024, Casanova categorically denied statements suggesting a romantic relationship between her and Prince Frederik. The report reproduced her denial in German: “Ich leugne kategorisch die Aussagen, die auf eine romantische Beziehung zwischen Prinz Frederik und mir schließen lassen.” She also said the matter was with her lawyers, who would take steps to protect her right to honour.

Was the rectification effort the same as the later lawsuit?
No. A separate December 2023 report reproduced a notice saying Casanova had instructed counsel to exercise Spain’s right of rectification under Organic Law 2/1984. That was a distinct legal step from the later lawsuit. The available reporting does not establish the outcome of the rectification request.
Did Genoveva Casanova sue Lecturas?
Yes. Casanova later brought a lawsuit against the magazine concerning the photographs. On 12 November 2025, news agency Ritzau reported that a judge dismissed her claims alleging defamation and violation of privacy. Ritzau said the decision treated the encounter as socially and politically relevant because both people were public figures. The underlying judgment and complete filings are not available in the cited reporting, so this is a description of the reported ruling, not an independent account of the court’s reasoning.
