Nothing in the show’s announced plans or in its writers’ comments hands her role to one character. What the show did after Leslie Charleson’s death was give Monica a two-part on-screen farewell in September 2025, then say through its co-head writers that her passing would start new stories for the family she left behind. Calling this “passing the torch” is a fair shorthand for that legacy intent, but it is an interpretation rather than an announced succession.
How the sequence unfolded
- January 12, 2025: Executive producer Frank Valentini announced Charleson’s death. ABC News reported it on January 13, 2025, giving her age as 79. ABC News
- Tenure: ABC News reports that Charleson played Monica from 1977 to 2023. The show’s later references to her decades on the series rest on that span.
- September 8, 2025: Co-head writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten told TV Insider how they planned the farewell. TV Insider
- September 25–26, 2025: The two-part farewell aired. ABC7 reported that the first part aired Thursday, September 25, and that the goodbye continued in Friday’s episode. ABC7 Los Angeles
- October 1, 2025: ABC’s official video page listed a clip titled “Who Will Inherit the Quartermaine Mansion?” It also lists a remembrance video for Charleson. ABC official video clips
The show did not handle the loss quietly. It spent a full two-episode arc on Monica before moving the family’s story forward, which is why the legacy question is about what comes next rather than about a single recast.
What the writers said the death is for
The most important on-record statement comes from Korte and Van Etten. They said the farewell was meant to be more than a funeral and a look back. In their words: “We wanted Monica’s passing to kick off a new story; to create new connections on the canvas; to test her loved ones; and to grow their relationships.” TV Insider, September 8, 2025
That is a statement about purpose. It says Monica’s death is a story engine for the characters who remain. It does not say which character, if any, will occupy her place in the family or on the show.

#1 Best Overall
Valentini framed the loss in terms of her standing among the people who worked with her. He said: “Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone and, just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaines, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew.” ABC News published the quote on January 13, 2025. The “nearly 50 years” phrase is his characterization of her time on the show, and it sits alongside the 1977-to-2023 span that ABC News reports.
Cast members have described the farewell in personal terms. Jane Elliot, who plays Tracy Quartermaine, said of the overlap between the actor’s death and the character’s: “It’s an actor that died and a character that died, so the duality of it, the depth of it, is painful and difficult to deal with.” ABC7 Los Angeles, September 26, 2025

Three ways to read “the torch”
Viewers and commentators tend to mean one of three things by the torch. The table below separates what the cited sources support from what they leave open.
| Reading | What the cited sources support | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| A direct replacement for Monica | Not supported. The writers’ comments name no successor. | Any casting, character reassignment or role transfer. Such a change would need its own announcement. |
| A broader family legacy | The writers said the death would create new connections and test her loved ones. Valentini called Monica “the heart of the Quartermaines.” | Specific plot outcomes for any character. |
| The Quartermaine mansion and its inheritance | ABC’s official page lists the clip “Who Will Inherit the Quartermaine Mansion?” under a October 1, 2025 date. | Who inherits the mansion. A clip title and listing date do not reveal its plot. |
The strongest reading is the second: a family legacy that the show intends to keep active through the characters who remain. The mansion question is a useful way to see that legacy in plot terms, but on the sources available it is a storyline prompt, not a resolved answer.
Charleson’s own account of Monica
In a final interview published by Soap Opera Digest on September 25, 2025, Charleson recalled joining General Hospital in 1977 as Monica Bard Quartermaine. She named Stuart Damon, who plays Alan, as her longtime leading man, and described the camaraderie among the Quartermaine cast. She also discussed the 1994 breast cancer diagnosis storyline, which she said was among the show’s first deeply developed medical stories. Soap Opera Digest, September 25, 2025
These are Charleson’s recollections, not production records that have been independently checked. They are the best first-person account of what Monica meant to the show’s creative history, and they explain why the writers chose to mark her death with a dedicated arc.

What remains unestablished
- Clip content: ABC’s official page documents clip titles and dates, not the full plot of each clip. Plot details should come from episodes, not from listings.
- Charleson’s recollections: Her account of the 1977 start, the Stuart Damon partnership and the 1994 storyline is first-person testimony, not independently verified production history.
- The “nearly 50 years” figure: It is Valentini’s description, while the date span reported by ABC News is 1977 to 2023.
