On February 28, 2025, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said preliminary examinations found Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, negative for carbon monoxide. That ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning as a suspected explanation at that stage; it did not establish how either person died. Later findings identified separate causes for their deaths.

What the sheriff’s carbon monoxide finding meant

Mendoza’s statement was a preliminary investigative finding. At the time, preliminary autopsies had not determined the causes of death, according to The Associated Press’s February 28, 2025 report. In other words, carbon monoxide poisoning had been ruled out as an explanation, but the investigation had not yet supplied a final answer about either death.

What later findings said about each death

Gene Hackman

Later reporting attributed Hackman’s death to heart disease, with Alzheimer’s disease contributing, according to the AP’s March 8, 2025 investigation timeline.

Betsy Arakawa

The same AP timeline reported that Arakawa died of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. An AP report on her released autopsy, published April 29, 2025, said her carbon monoxide level was within the normal range.

Why “ruled out” was not the final cause-of-death finding

Ruling out one suspected cause is not the same as determining what did cause a death. Mendoza’s February statement addressed carbon monoxide; the later reports described the causes attributed to each person. The finding should not be taken to establish a connection between the deaths and a household appliance, heater, or other specific source.
