On February 28, 2025, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said the medical examiner’s initial examination found no sign of carbon monoxide in Gene Hackman or his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The preliminary findings did not establish how either person died. Later autopsy reporting identified separate causes of death for Arakawa and Hackman.

What the initial carbon monoxide finding said

At a February 28, 2025 news conference, Sheriff Adan Mendoza reported that the medical examiner’s initial examination showed no sign of carbon monoxide in either person. As KSFR reported, Mendoza said: “Both individuals tested negative for carbon monoxide.” (KSFR)

The finding addressed carbon monoxide; it was not a cause-of-death determination. The Associated Press reported that the preliminary autopsy findings had not yet determined the causes of death. (Associated Press, February 28, 2025)

What later autopsy reporting established

In reporting published April 29, 2025, the Associated Press said Arakawa died from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome and Hackman’s main cause of death was heart disease. It also reported that Arakawa’s carbon monoxide levels were within the normal range, consistent with the initial update. (Associated Press, April 29, 2025)
