Arakawa likely died around February 11, 2025, of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome; Hackman likely died about a week later, from heart disease, with advanced Alzheimer’s disease contributing. Workers found them at their Santa Fe home on February 26. The early description of the circumstances as “suspicious” reflected investigators’ uncertainty before the causes were established—not a final finding of foul play.
What officials concluded
New Mexico officials ruled both deaths natural. The medical findings identified hantavirus pulmonary syndrome as Arakawa’s cause of death and heart disease as Hackman’s. Officials also said Hackman’s advanced Alzheimer’s disease contributed to his death.
That conclusion resolved the uncertainty that had prompted an extensive investigation. Authorities initially said the circumstances were suspicious enough to require a thorough search, but that early wording was not a determination that a crime had occurred. Tests for carbon monoxide were negative.
How the timeline was reconstructed
Workers found the couple at their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on February 26, 2025, and alerted police. The dates of death reported by officials are estimates based on available evidence, not directly observed times.
#1 Best Overall
| Person | Officially reported timing | Cause and basis |
|---|---|---|
| Betsy Arakawa | Likely around February 11, 2025 | Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. February 11 was her last known outing; officials used available activity and medical evidence to reconstruct the timeline. |
| Gene Hackman | Likely around February 18, 2025 | Heart disease. Officials cited the last activity recorded by his pacemaker, which showed an abnormal rhythm. |
The roughly week-long interval is an official reconstruction. It should not be read as an exact, observed time of death for either person.
What officials said about Hackman’s health
The medical examiner said Hackman had significant heart disease and advanced Alzheimer’s disease, and officials said Alzheimer’s contributed to his death. New Mexico’s chief medical investigator, Dr. Heather Jarrell, said, “He had significant heart disease, and I think ultimately that’s what resulted in his death.” The Associated Press reported that the examiner said Hackman may not have known Arakawa had died. That was a qualified assessment, not a confirmed account of what he knew.

What later public records added
In April 2025, public records included body-camera video and information about Arakawa’s searches for illness-related information. A court order required images of the bodies to be obscured in public records. The New Mexico Department of Health described Arakawa’s death as the state’s first reported hantavirus death of 2025, a figure specific to New Mexico and that year, as reported by Source New Mexico.
