For Perth, plan to watch the 2026 Geminids on Monday night, December 14, into the early hours of Tuesday, December 15. NASA lists the shower’s peak as December 13–14, while Australian Geographic’s 2026 guide predicts a local peak early on December 15; these dates describe the same mid-December peak across time zones. For a better chance of seeing meteors, choose the darkest accessible spot you can reach safely, get away from streetlights, and give your eyes time to adjust.
When to watch the 2026 Geminids in Perth
NASA lists the Geminids as active from December 4 to 17, with a peak entry of December 13–14. Australian Geographic’s 2026 sky guide puts the predicted local peak in Perth in the early morning of Tuesday, December 15. The practical viewing window is therefore Monday night, December 14, through Tuesday morning, December 15. If cloud or other conditions get in the way, the adjacent nights are reasonable backups while the shower is active.
NASA’s 2026 listing says viewers under dark skies may see 40–50 meteors per hour. That is a dark-sky expectation, not a forecast for Perth suburbs or any one named location. The number actually visible depends on darkness, cloud, moonlight, obstructions and how much of the sky you can see. NASA also gives a general maximum of 120 per hour under perfect conditions; that ceiling is not a Perth prediction.
Where to watch near Perth
Perth Observatory’s 2025 Geminids guide names several candidate locations relatively close to the city, and recommends the Central Wheatbelt for a darker, more remote experience. Destination Perth also promotes regional stargazing areas. These are starting points for planning, not guarantees of public access after dark, safe parking, clear horizons or favorable weather. Check current access rules and conditions before setting out.

| Location | What it offers | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| South Ledge Lookout, Mundaring Weir | Perth Observatory lists it as a darker option relatively close to the city. | Night access, parking and a clear view of the sky. |
| Point Peron | A coastal option listed by Perth Observatory among locations with darker skies than central Perth. | Access at night, local lighting and an open view. |
| Rottnest Island | Perth Observatory lists the island as a nearby darker-sky option. | Transport and overnight logistics, as well as where you can legally and safely observe. |
| Lake Leschenaultia | A Perth Hills/outskirts option named by Perth Observatory. | Opening hours and whether visitors can remain after dark. |
| Central Wheatbelt | Perth Observatory recommends travelling farther for a genuinely dark experience. | A suitable legal stopping place, safe parking, facilities and the return journey. |
| Perth Hills, Northam, Chittering, Moore River/Gingin and the Avon Valley | Destination Perth identifies these as regional stargazing destinations or hotspots. | Whether a specific location is accessible at night and has an unobstructed, dark sky. |
There is no verified, directly comparable 2026 meteor-rate forecast for these individual sites, so they cannot be ranked by expected counts. In practice, a farther destination may offer less city glow, while a nearer site is easier to reach; on the night, cloud, lighting and an open view can matter more than the destination’s name.
How to watch the shower
- Choose darkness and an open view. Get as far from city and street lights as practical, and select a place where buildings, trees or hills do not block much of the sky.
- Arrive and settle in. NASA advises allowing about 30 minutes in darkness for your eyes to adapt. Avoid bright screens and lights during that time.
- Look broadly, not only at Gemini. Gemini marks the shower’s radiant—the direction the meteors appear to come from—but meteors can streak across the whole sky. NASA explicitly advises against watching only the constellation.
- Be patient and stay comfortable. A blanket, sleeping bag or reclining chair makes it easier to watch for a while. Dress for the conditions and bring only the light you need to move around safely.
You do not need a telescope or binoculars. They show a much smaller area of sky than your unaided eyes, while meteors may appear anywhere overhead.

What causes the Geminids?
The Geminids are associated with dust from asteroid 3200 Phaethon. As Earth passes through this debris, particles enter the atmosphere and burn up, producing the bright streaks. The shower returns each December.

Plan the trip, not just the viewing
- Check the location’s current opening hours and night-access rules before travelling; a place named as a stargazing destination may not be open to visitors after dark.
- Check the forecast close to the event and be ready to switch to an adjacent night or a different accessible location.
- Choose a safe place to stop and observe. Do not assume a highway rest area or roadside pull-off is suitable simply because it is away from city lights.
- Let someone know your route and expected return time if you are heading farther out, and make sure you have a safe way home after a late night.
