She also explained how theatre-style rehearsals helped her prepare for Gullak and why the stage remains central to her sense of direction.
Why does Geetanjali Kulkarni choose particular roles?
Kulkarni told Scroll that she looks for meaning in a project and pays attention to the makers’ vision. She described deciding that theatre, at least, would be work she believed in: “I will do what I totally believe in.” Her account presents role selection as a question of conviction, not simply visibility or the popularity of a format.

She also said she tries to avoid being stereotyped or following whatever formula is popular. “I try my best not to repeat anything,” she said. Kulkarni recalled turning down some roles because they felt too similar to her part in Gullak; this is her description of offers she received, not an independently verified record of them. How did theatre rehearsals help her prepare for Gullak?
Kulkarni said she initially worried about playing a North Indian character because of her accent. To prepare, she undertook 10–20 days of workshops to develop a distinctive dialect. She credited the production’s rehearsal approach with helping her make the performance work: “It is purely because of the theatre style of rehearsal that I was able to pull it off.” The duration and account of preparation are her recollections in the 2022 interview.

That process connects her screen work to her theatre training: rehearsal gave her time to build the character collaboratively rather than relying only on an idea of how the role should sound.
What does theatre mean to Kulkarni?
Kulkarni described the stage as a source of direction and grounding. She said she enjoys both rehearsals and performances, though the waiting period between them can be tiring. In the Scroll interview, she said she would return to theatre quickly if an exciting role came along; that was her outlook at the time of publication, not a current commitment or schedule.

She reported working continuously in theatre from 1996 to 2005. Her background includes amateur college theatre and training at the National School of Drama, followed by work in Marathi and Hindi theatre as well as film and television projects.
Collaboration beyond the stage
In the Scroll interview, Kulkarni said she belongs to “the school of collaborative work” and connected that preference to her interest in web series. Earlier interviews provide further context: she has discussed learning through ensemble work and from different directors, as well as theatre’s place in her culture. Those interviews also describe her work with Quest and children in rural Maharashtra. A separate Mumbai Theatre Guide interview covers Goshtarang, a programme built around story-based theatre work and a fellowship for theatre practitioners. Mumbai Theatre Guide’s interview with Geetanjali Kulkarni and its interview with her about Goshtarang offer additional context.

What did Kulkarni think streaming was changing?
In 2022, Kulkarni said streaming was creating more female-driven roles and well-written characters. She also felt it benefited actors with experience in theatre and independent films, whose skills could suit collaborative, longer-form projects. These are her views in that interview, not a measured industry-wide finding, and they should be read as a perspective from that moment rather than a description of current conditions.
