Yes. Palestinian journalists and media workers continue reporting from inside Gaza, but their work remains dangerous and difficult to verify independently. The latest figures and incidents below are dated snapshots: casualty classifications change as evidence is reviewed, foreign journalists have not had independent access according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), and documented injuries show that a ceasefire did not end the risks.
Who is still reporting from Gaza?
Palestinian journalists and media workers remain central to coverage from inside Gaza. Their reporting is produced under conditions in which physical danger, access restrictions and disruptions to communications can affect what reporters can gather and how quickly they can share it. Those conditions do not make their work inherently unverifiable; they do make independent corroboration and clear attribution especially important.
Journalists have been injured while working
In a September 7, 2026 alert, updated September 8, CPJ reported that Gaza journalists Ali Jahjouh and Ezaldin Albtesh were injured in separate incidents while on assignment or walking to assignments. CPJ said the incidents occurred during the October 2025 ceasefire, which reduced Israeli strikes but did not halt them.
In response to CPJ’s account of the strike, the Israeli military said it targeted a Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative, takes steps to mitigate civilian harm and does not target journalists. Those are the military’s stated position; CPJ’s report documents the journalists’ injuries. CPJ regional director Sara Qudah said the attacks showed that ceasefires had done little to protect journalists from the dangers of reporting in Gaza and Lebanon.

Why can’t foreign journalists enter Gaza independently?
CPJ said Israeli authorities had refused independent journalist access to Gaza since October 7, 2023. In its account of a legal challenge published October 16, 2025, and updated September 24, 2026, CPJ argued that brief visits under military escort do not replace independent reporting.
The distinction matters for verification. A journalist reporting from inside Gaza may witness an event directly, while a reporter who cannot enter independently has fewer opportunities to examine a scene, speak to people there or check an account firsthand. An escorted visit may provide access to selected places at a particular time, but it is not equivalent to a reporter choosing where to go and whom to interview. Readers should therefore distinguish a firsthand account from material corroborated by independent reporting, and note when access limitations leave a claim unresolved.

How many journalists have been killed in Gaza?
There is no single fixed total in the sources cited here, and the latest CPJ figure is not a Gaza-only death toll. On September 24, 2026, CPJ said it had completed a review of 229 deaths covering journalists and media workers killed in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory from October 2023 through August 2026. That geographic scope includes more than Gaza, so the figure should not be described as the number killed in Gaza.
Why reported totals change
CPJ said its 2026 review removed 22 people from its previous journalist list, reinstated six and reclassified 12. Where new evidence emerged, CPJ said it spoke with at least two new sources who knew the person killed in 220 of the 229 cases. The organization said it applies its existing criteria and updates cases when credible information changes. CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg described accuracy and credibility as fundamental to its mission and to accountability efforts.

CPJ distinguishes journalists and media workers from people it finds were engaged in combat, and its live database separates confirmed from suspected work-related deaths. A figure therefore depends on the source’s time window, geography, definitions and classification method—not just on when it was published.
| Source and date | Reported figure | Scope and how to read it |
|---|---|---|
| CPJ review, September 24, 2026 | 229 deaths reviewed | Journalists and media workers in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory, October 2023–August 2026; not a Gaza-only tally. CPJ says it applies its criteria and updates cases as credible information changes. |
| CPJ and signatories’ joint letter, August 6, 2025 | “Over 230 journalists and media workers in Gaza” killed since October 2023 | A claim by the letter’s signatories about Gaza at that date. The signatories’ counting method is not stated in the cited letter; it is not interchangeable with CPJ’s later review, which has a different date, scope and subsequent case revisions. |
These figures describe different claims and should not be combined or treated as a simple before-and-after count. CPJ’s continuously updated database is the place to check the status of individual cases and its confirmed or suspected classifications.

How do communications and humanitarian conditions affect reporting?
Blackouts can cut reporters off from newsrooms
In a November 16, 2023 report, CPJ linked a communications shutdown in Gaza to fuel shortages. It said earlier blackouts had disrupted media coverage and severed contact between journalists and colleagues. This is evidence of what happened during those outages in 2023, not evidence that communications are currently down or that the same conditions persist in October 2026.
CPJ’s Middle East and North Africa program coordinator Sherif Mansour said at the time that withholding fuel was preventing journalists from providing updates. That was CPJ’s assessment, not a neutral finding about responsibility or intent.

Older humanitarian figures need their dates attached
OCHA’s Situation Report No. 69, published February 27, 2026, described conditions generally as of February 25. It reported that over 50 percent of Gaza’s population still said it relied on burning waste as an alternative to cooking gas in February. This is a dated measure of one aspect of the wider reporting environment, not an estimate of conditions on October 12, 2026 and not, by itself, evidence of a particular effect on an individual journalist’s work.
Quick Recap
How should readers assess reports from Gaza?
- Check who is making the claim. Separate a journalist’s account, a documented incident, an official response and an advocacy organization’s characterization.
- Keep the date and location attached. A blackout reported in November 2023 or a humanitarian statistic from February 2026 does not establish conditions in October 2026.
- Read casualty totals with their scope and method. Look for the source’s geographic coverage, time window, definitions and whether cases are confirmed, suspected or under review.
- Distinguish access from corroboration. A military-escorted visit is not the same as independent access; nor does a restricted reporting environment make every claim false. It means the available evidence and remaining uncertainties need to be stated.
