This selective timeline, based mainly on U.S. television reporting and scholarship, distinguishes daytime from primetime and gay characters from the broader range of LGBTQ teen stories.
1992–1994: Daytime and primetime milestones
Billy Douglas on One Life to Live (1992)
A 1999 Los Angeles Times retrospective identifies Billy Douglas as a recurring gay teen on the daytime soap One Life to Live. His storyline included coming out and romance; the character later left the show. This daytime milestone is distinct from the primetime milestone that followed.
Rickie Vasquez on My So-Called Life (1994)
The same retrospective describes Rickie Vasquez, played by Wilson Cruz, as primetime’s first recurring gay teenager. Rickie’s story included rejection by his family, but it was not only a story of hardship: friendship and moments of joy were also part of the character’s life. Creator Winnie Holzman told the Times, “There are gays in the world, why shouldn’t they be on TV?”
Late 1990s: From guest appearances to recurring arcs
In its 1999 account, the Los Angeles Times contrasts earlier one-episode gay teen appearances on Life Goes On, Beverly Hills, 90210, and Blossom with more prominent recurring roles then appearing on television. Dawson’s Creek was one example: Jack McPhee’s coming-out story drew partly on creator Kevin Williamson’s high-school experiences, according to the article.

The shift was not simply about having a character appear on screen. A recurring role could give a teen room for relationships and personal change across episodes, rather than making identity the subject of a single visit. Director Simon Shore described character-based storytelling this way: “The way to change attitudes is by creating a character who we like and know and want to be happy.”
Early 2000s: More stories across daytime and primetime
A 2015 retrospective from Mic identifies Jessie Sammler on Once and Again and Will Horton on Days of Our Lives among the early-2000s examples, alongside storylines on Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty. The article calls Will the first gay teen to eventually marry on daytime television; that milestone is the retrospective’s characterization.

2009–2015: Glee puts teen relationships in the foreground
Glee ran on U.S. broadcast television from 2009 to 2015, according to a 2020 scholarly book on lesbian visibility in television. The 2015 Mic retrospective points to Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson as prominent teen characters whose stories included coming out, bullying, crushes, and relationships. Their arcs placed romance and ordinary adolescent concerns alongside the challenges of being LGBTQ.
2010: Lesbian teen visibility on Skins
Scholar Kate McNicholas Smith’s 2020 book, Lesbians on Television: New Queer Visibility & The Lesbian Normal, examines Emily Fitch and Naomi Campbell as a teenage couple on the British drama Skins. Its analysis also considers how their portrayal and fandom contributed to lesbian visibility. This example belongs in a timeline of gay teens because the subject is broader queer representation, but Emily and Naomi’s identities should not be flattened into a generic label.

2013–2015: The Fosters and younger teen romance
The 2015 Mic retrospective presents Jude Foster and Connor Stevens, both 13, as a milestone in portraying mutual attraction between young teens as a developing relationship. The article argued that representation had advanced while calling for more varied queer characters and stories. The significance lies in depicting young people’s feelings and relationship development—not in treating every LGBTQ teen story as interchangeable.
How to read today’s representation figures
Industry counts can show broad visibility trends, but they do not answer every question about teen characters or the quality of a portrayal.

- 2007 content analysis: Researchers analyzed more than 2,700 episodes from the 2001–02 and 2002–03 seasons and found that about 15% of sampled shows contained at least one instance of sexual behavior or talk related to gay, lesbian, or bisexual people. A single instance could qualify a show, and the measure did not assess whether the talk was negative, neutral, or affirming. It is neither a current statistic nor a count of LGBTQ teen characters. - 2021–22 broadcast primetime: GLAAD reported that LGBTQ characters made up 11.9% of series regulars scheduled for broadcast scripted primetime, a record percentage in the history of that report at the time. This was not teen-specific and did not cover every platform. Read GLAAD’s report announcement.
- 2024–25 season: GLAAD’s 20th annual Where We Are on TV report counted 201 LGBTQ characters, or 41%, as not returning. Reasons included series cancellations or endings, a character leaving, and limited-series status. The count covers tracked LGBTQ characters across scripted broadcast, cable, and streaming series—not just teens. GLAAD’s summary names Heartstopper and Élite among series ending. These figures use different populations and methods, so they cannot be combined into a single measure of progress. A character count also cannot, on its own, show whether a story gives a teen an independent arc, includes friendship and ordinary life, or treats identity with care.

The examples trace a change in the kinds of television stories documented over time: from single-episode appearances, to recurring coming-out and relationship arcs, to stories involving younger teens and lesbian couples. They are selected U.S. and UK examples, not a global inventory or proof that representation improved at every step. The underlying sources also differ: the early milestones come from a 1999 newspaper retrospective, later character examples from a 2015 retrospective and a 2020 scholarly book, while GLAAD’s newer counts cover LGBTQ characters broadly rather than teens specifically.
