Garth Hudson, the keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist whose Lowrey organ helped shape The Band’s sound, died on January 21, 2025, at age 87. He was the group’s last surviving founding member. The Associated Press reported that The Band’s social accounts confirmed his death without giving further details; no cause of death was announced in that report.
What made Garth Hudson’s playing distinctive?
Hudson’s contribution went beyond playing keyboard parts: he brought an unusual range of sounds into The Band’s arrangements. He played piano, synthesizers and horns as well as organ, and his Lowrey electric organ had a different character from the more familiar Hammond sound, as The Guardian reported.
A vivid example is “The Genetic Method,” the organ introduction to “Chest Fever.” The Associated Press identifies the introduction as Hudson’s creation and “Chest Fever” as a showcase for his playing. An ABC report also highlights his Lowrey organ work on the song. It offers a focused way to hear his role: the organ is not simply a background layer but a distinct opening statement before the rest of the performance begins.
Hudson’s place in The Band
Hudson was a founding member of The Band and, by the time of his death, its last surviving founding member, according to The Band’s official profile. That description places his death in the history of the group as well as in the life of an individual musician: he was part of the original lineup whose work made the band’s sound recognizable.

Where to start listening
Music from Big Pink is a relevant place to hear Hudson within The Band’s music. For a documentary-minded listener, begin with the album as a full group recording, then listen specifically for the organ texture and compare it with the more conspicuous opening of “Chest Fever.” The Band’s recordings are listed on its official recordings page; check the current edition and availability before choosing a physical copy.
