What is known about Garth Hudson’s death
The Associated Press reported Hudson’s death at 87 on January 21, 2025, citing confirmation from The Band’s social-media accounts. The Washington Post reported that Hudson’s friend Jan Haust confirmed the death but did not provide a cause. No cause of death was disclosed in those reports.
What Garth Hudson played in The Band
Hudson’s contribution went well beyond conventional keyboard accompaniment. He moved among Lowrey organ, piano, synthesizers and horns, adding unusual colors to a group whose music drew on rock, folk, country, R&B and other roots traditions.
- On “Up on Cripple Creek,” his clavinet and wah-wah effect give the track its distinctive, loping keyboard sound.
- He played piano on “Rag Mama Rag,” contributing to the song’s buoyant, old-time feel.
- His saxophone is heard on “It Makes No Difference.”
- The organ introduction to “Chest Fever” is among his best-known parts, setting up the song before the band enters.
These contrasting parts show why Hudson was more than a keyboard player in the narrow sense: he helped arrange the musical atmosphere, using different instruments and textures to serve each song.

How Hudson and The Band found their sound
The musicians who became The Band first developed as a backing group for rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. They later worked with Bob Dylan, experiences that helped prepare them for a distinct identity of their own. Hudson’s broad instrumental palette became part of the group’s roots-oriented sound.
Two useful listening starting points are Music from Big Pink and the group’s self-titled album, The Band. Together, they offer a way to hear the ensemble’s musical range and Hudson’s role within it.
