An idle-power figure is only a baseline; a PC encoding continuously may draw more.
What to compare
Use the same stream quality and 30-day period for both options. The PC calculation depends on measured wall power and your marginal electricity rate. The VPS calculation must include the server configuration, outgoing transfer, storage, and any operational services you need. A low monthly compute price alone does not establish that a VPS is cheaper.
- Home PC: measured average watts during the streaming workload, multiplied by powered hours and your marginal price per kilowatt-hour.
- VPS: recurring plan price plus required CPU/GPU or encoder capacity, outbound transfer, storage, and any relevant overage or service charges.
- Like-for-like quality: use the bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and codec you intend to stream, not a generic YouTube bitrate.
Measure the PC’s actual streaming draw
Use a plug-in electricity usage monitor to measure the wall draw of the setup that will remain on. Record average watts during the actual stream workload, including the encoder and whichever display or peripherals will stay powered. If you also measure idle power, keep it as a separate baseline. PSU ratings and component specifications do not tell you the setup’s measured wall draw.
There is no universal modern gaming-PC idle or YouTube-encoding wattage established here. A 2020 European Commission Joint Research Centre report presents a modeled mixed-use profile for an average gaming computer plus display totaling 1,394 kWh per year; it includes gaming, browsing, video streaming, idle, sleep, and off periods, including 4.4 hours of gaming per day. It is not a prediction for a PC encoding a continuous stream. A 2019 Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory publication reports measurements of 26 gaming systems and finds energy use varies with hardware and workload.

Calculate the PC’s monthly electricity cost
Use this formula:
Average watts ÷ 1,000 × powered hours × marginal electricity price per kWh
For a 30-day month, 24/7 operation is 720 hours. For an average 365-day year, it is 8,760 hours. This estimates variable energy cost, not fixed utility charges that generally remain regardless of whether one computer is switched off. Use the rate that applies to the extra electricity on your own bill; a published regional average may not match your tariff. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Monthly provides official U.S. statistics, but it is not a substitute for an individual bill.
For example, if your measured streaming setup averages W watts and your marginal rate is R per kWh, its estimated 30-day energy cost is 0.72 × W × R. Substitute your measured watts and local tariff; do not substitute an assumed “typical gaming PC” figure.

Estimate the VPS transfer requirement
A continuous stream sends substantial data even if the video itself is prerecorded. Estimate monthly outgoing data from the actual bitrate:

This gives decimal gigabytes before protocol overhead. For 30 days, a continuous 5 Mbps feed works out to about 1,620 GB (1.62 TB); 10 Mbps works out to about 3,240 GB (3.24 TB). These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate and time, not measured traffic. Ask the provider how it counts egress, overhead, and overages, and check the current plan terms.

YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends 10 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30, 17 Mbps H.264 for 1080p60, and 50 Mbps H.264 for 4K60. Recommendations vary by codec and output settings, so calculate transfer using your intended configuration. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers, but that does not remove your need to send the incoming feed over a reliable connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
An advertised transfer allowance can change the economics: a 1 TB bundle, for example, would not cover the 5 Mbps, 30-day calculation above without additional transfer or another cost. Treat provider limits and overage prices as plan-specific, and verify them on the provider’s current official pages before buying.
Check that the VPS can produce the stream
Transfer capacity is only one requirement. Confirm that the VPS has enough CPU, GPU, or other encoder capacity to produce the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate continuously. Check the provider’s plan terms and test the actual workload; the ability to transmit the required bytes does not prove the server can encode reliably.

YouTube’s guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1, along with constant bitrate encoding and settings by output format. It advises creators to test before starting a live stream and recommends a speed test for upload bitrate. Use the settings for your selected codec and target quality rather than assuming one setting fits all streams.

The PC may be the lower-cost choice if its measured streaming electricity cost is below the complete VPS bill and it meets your operational needs. A VPS may suit you if its full price and transfer terms work for your stream and you prefer not to keep the home machine running. Neither option is automatically cheaper or more reliable.
